Wow. That latest concept looks fantastic - and restoring the Hotel Chamberlain next door would be a blessing for the future of the neighborhood!

From Beam Development's website:

Quote:
509 SE Grand Avenue
Beam Development and Urban Development Partners are teaming up on the redevelopment of the historic Hotel Chamberlain in Portland’s expanding Central Eastside/Grand Avenue Historic neighborhood.

Yep. Schliefer building is in the historic district so it's protected. The great thing about this project is that it will be returned to its original purpose as a hotel.

I recall seeing some discussion about the Schleifer building being renovated somewhere in the Central Eastside thread. It was several months ago so you'll probably have to dig back a few pages.

As this is all one project (albeit with two buildings by two different architects) I think I might move the old discussion from the Central Eastside thread into this thread. I just need to spend some time finding it...

There might be confusion between this project and 5 MLK (across from The Yard) where the Fishel's Furniture building is also scheduled for demolition. I remember some discussion in this forum about saving that building also.

I posted the link a few comments above. It's being restored to its former use as the Hotel Chamberlain.

The renovation of the Chamberlain Hotel at 509 SE Grand Ave has been submitted for Type II Design Review by Works Progress Architecture:

Quote:
Proposal is the reuse and rehabilitation of the historic Chamberlain Hotel. The proposed development will consist of 57 hotel units to be integrated with a 14 story mixed-use bldg to be built on the asphalt parking lots to the west and southwest.A connection between the two hotel areas is provided through a shared courtyard located mid-block off se stark .

Homeless training to fix up the building? Put them to work. That would make too much sense. But I can help but find it ironic that companies are dying for laborers and right next door to new shelter will be a huge project going up. Lets hope there are no Shelter Nimby's? Keep it down, trying to get my 15 hours of sleep. This is a terrible decision. Cant help but feel that this will be the end of that historic building.

The Design Review application for the Chamberlain Hotel (Shleifer Furniture) was submitted in February. Getting through that process, and the subsequent building permit review, is going to take some time. Per the article the shelter is only proposed to remain until the fall. I wouldn't take this news as any kind of indication that long term plans for the building have changed.

Per the Oregonian's article:

After the homeless shelter is shut down later this year, co-owners Beam Development and Urban Development and Partners will turn it into a hotel.

Looks like some folks didn't read the article:

Quote:
Shleifer Furniture closed after 80 years and the building was sold to Malsin in 2015 who has plans to turn it into a hotel.

Those plans, are still a green light, according to Theriault.
I have high hopes for the Shleifer Furniture building being rehabbed. It's such a wonderful old building.
