Are there no double deckers at all in the US/Canada?

If no any reason why not?

Community Transit which serves Snohomish County north of Seattle (including a lot of routes to and from Downtown Seattle) has one in service and 23 more on order. They call it the "DoubleTall" - a play on the local coffee obsession.

http://www.commtrans.org/Projects/DoubleTall.cfm

According to their info the only other place in the US that is using double deckers is Las Vegas.

I would imagine double deckers are either too expensive or too tall or both or simply not a north american phenomenon. we have lots of bendy buses though.

I think the reason double deckers are used in certain cities are the width of streets and general street pattern. It would be impossible to run articulated buses on certain stretches in old town Copenhagen or through parts of London's medieval streets for example. Articulated buses are probably cheaper to both acquire and maintain (I have no idea about this though).

Correct. Since most American and Canadian cities have grids of streets rather than the tight jumbles of European streets, articulated buses are easier to use than double decker buses.

There are only a handful of cities in the US or Canada with areas of European-style medieval-type street networks. New York, Boston and Washington in the States, and probably only Quebec in Canada. Even then, in all cases the area in question is relatively small.

I have seen double-decker tourist buses here in Philadelphia...but that's more like a touristy gimmick, like the Ride the Ducks thing (OMG they are so godawfully annoying with their quacking!). There are no double-decker buses in the Philadelphia transit system (SEPTA) whatsoever (although there are plenty of articulated or bendy ones).

Anyone know why the CTA ordered the new New Flyers with the old front instead of the new one? I think they are going to look dated sooner because of it...

Here are the main buses currently used in Chicago:

These are the newest and are currently being delivered, 60' New Flyer Articulated Hybrids:

40' New Flyers (almost all of them are new):

60' NABI Articulated buses (have been unreliable and have suspension issues, but look good IMO):

40' Novabus (kinda goofy looking I think):

40' Flxible (oldest in service, only high floor buses left in the CTA):

The older Novabuses look really really happy. The new design with smaller headlights look more mature and serious.

A nice pastel colour. Just like Winnipeg's previous design. It was also replaced with an uninspired, uniconic blue stripe.

Metro Transit (Halifax/Dartmouth, Canada) has had maybe 4 different liveries since it was created in 1981.

The earliest:

Next, my personal favourite. Blue/green stripes, nice typeface, and a little green swish that served as the MT logo.

Next, the short-lived blue/yellow stripes.

Current livery:

Tucson just released new drawings of the new SunTran buses. As well as the new logo.

I think they look pretty cool.

They're OK. I'm not a big fan of using gray on transit vehicles.

I was wondering... what are all of the North American cities that have some form of BRT?? I'd love to see them.

I took some recent pics of Houston area busses..

I think the Tuscon scheme is pretty sharp. I MUCH prefer gray to white as a background color.

I'm not from San Francisco, but I have a lot of pictures of the transit there. Here are some of its buses. I don't *think* the different colors mean anything, but it's possible I'm wrong.

The first one (grey with red) is my favorite. Not a fan or the orange and white.

Victoria, BC uses them since the streets are narrow and it's too hard for the articulated to get around the corners. I think that Kelowna, BC also has double decker buses

Las Vegas recently acquired about 130 double Decker buses. I see them all the time now and often times they are stuffed full of people.
