Given Vranich's record, people are right to be skeptical. But I hope that these roadblocks aren't being thrown up by people opposed to the demolition. As skeptical as I am about Vranich, if he is serious I hope he completes the project. I wouldn't be opposed to the demolition at all if I was sure something would be built in its place. I'm also satisfied with part of the fed building being kept.

Yes, the Spec reporting has been dismal of late. I reached my limit several months ago and cancelled my subscription. These days the only scoops they're getting are from Baskin Robbins.

Right? I remember back in the day a reporter hounded down a story. Nowadays they cut and paste bits and pieces from the Internet while munching on Doritos, dis the mayor on Twitter then moan on about how he doesn't return their calls.

There will be cranes in the air... lotsa money to be made now that the city is putting our money into the pot with the Mac situation.. Which i hope to work at when completed... I walk to work now, and that will even be closer...

Why? Is part of the street blocked or something?

Must be. I turned on Queen before I could see. But traffic was pretty backed up and I'd imagine they would close one section of the road when they get closer to demolishing the South East portion of the building.

I think it's sad to see another building come down when Drako already owns so many vacant lots. Didn't he have big plans for the HMP site that should be finished (or at least well on their way) by now?

I'm hoping that I'll be eating crow in a few years time, but right now, I'm far from optimistic.

Yes, Main St is down one lane. 4 lanes instead of 5 lanes, oh the horror.

It was down TO one lane, not down one lane. Crash at Main and MacNab, hence the big backup. Four-lane Main St moves just fine most times.

Permits Pending, Vrancor Still Plans To Save Federal Building’s West Wing [Nicole O’Reilly, Hamilton Spectator, Aug 30, 2011]

Developer Vrancor Group has yet to submit amendments to its initial demolition permit, but a spokesperson insists they still plan to save the federal building’s west wing.

“Vrancor is still fully committed to retaining the west wing of the federal building,” said Tyler McDiarmid. “Our structural engineers have been working with city hall to amend the demolition permit.”

The demolition of 150 Main St. E., which began earlier this month, is on track to be completed in two months, he said.

....

Despite the fact that Vrancor hasn’t submitted the requested revised drawings and an application, spokesperson Kelly Anderson said the city’s current impression is that the west wing is being saved.

“The building services division can’t speculate on what the owner’s final decision will be, but last we understood, the west wing was to remain,” she said.
