How is it that councillors are still managing to evade public accountability by having off-the-record "it's not a meeting" meetings? If the membership of a committee attend a "social gathering" and business of the committee is discussed at this social gathering, then it is a committee meeting. Stop thumbing your nose at the citizens of Hamilton, gentlemen!

Our new ombudsman is going to be a very busy man this term...

Too many cooks, spoil the broth!

I think the reason they have these pre-meetings are to test the waters. this is common sense as for total transparency, get real!!!!! The people of this city couldn't agree on a basic coffee run/order.
As for too many cooks spoil the broth in this city some of the vocal input is from kooks not cooks.
We blame our elected officials (yes, we the people who didn't show up to vote. got the same old same old) and yet when they do vote on something, the people who disagree. whine long and hard because they didn't get their decision.
That my friends historically speaking is why the Red Hill Valley Expressway took 50 years, yes half a centrury, a lifetime for some to appear. We had the tree huggers, the political legal back door shenanigans where one level of government wants to sue the other and the only people who make money from taxpayers pockets are the liars sorry lawyers.
So if you want the people trying to do SOMETHING for this city to waste hours and dollars to satisfy every "nosy Rosey" Hire another public paid scutineer.
We all know there are many money pits (IWS, Ti-cats, HECFI) that siphon off millions annually, well ditch them. If someone can turn a profit let them. The Bulldogs get crap attendence because they won't listen and continue to charge $26 a ticket to crowds of 2-3 thou. So much for thinking of the families. $70 bucks to see Buddy Guy. plus parking. this is hamilton and we are in a global recession.
Let the people who are trying anything, do something and stop picking the fly crap out of the pepper, it is time consuming and counter productive. concentrate of getting some of these new hotels and bldgs downtowns so we have the hotel capacity to rival cities like London for conventions. The Sheraton ain't cutting it.
Just too many people want to put in their 2 cents and that is the total amount they wish to invest and talk is cheap. No offence just a general observation.

Looks like there will be a RFP for HECFI in the short time.

Wonder if Live Nation would be interested?

Well it's official. Opera Hamilton is ditching Hamilton Place because of HECFI's massive rate increase and is making its new home at Dofasco Centre for the Performing Arts.

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...area-for-arias

We'll see other Hamilton theatrical companies follow suit shortly.

Exactly how HECFI expects to reverse its operating losses by increasing its number of dark nights at Hamilton Place is a bit of a mystery to me.

Personally I think they got a better venue out of this one. Hecfi can shove it as far as I'm concerned.

If Lord Stanley's cup can't bring out a good attendance for a Bulldogs game, I really fear for the team.

I don't actually see why it would be all that big a draw...

The verdict is in from another consultant's review of HECFI, precipitated by the org's need for $7.25 million in subsidies in 2010.

Mark McNeil in the June 22, 2011 Hamilton Spectator:

HECFI needs clear mandate to clear up its problems

"An independent review of Hamilton Entertainment and Convention Facilities Inc. (HECFI) says the lack of clear mandate has led to widespread confusion and tensions between city officials and HECFI’s board and management. Some think HECFI, which oversees Hamilton Place, the Hamilton Convention Centre and Copps Coliseum, should be generating economic activity and helping the city’s downtown, the newly released study by KPMG says. Others believe it should be run like a business with a goal of turning a profit or breaking even."

It'd be interesting to see what, if anything, has changed since KPMG's 2004 audit.

KPMG's findings appear on pages 11-92 of this 117-page PDF: Independent External Audit Review of HECFI Operations (CM11013)

.
"Generating economic activity and helping the city's downtown" : You cannot effectively run an organization like HECFI with such a fuzzy and ill-defined mandate. There's no objective basis on which to base organizational goals and decisions.

"run like a business with a goal of turning a profit" : now there's a clear goal to base decisions on. These are not at odds, this is probably the best way to serve the more lofty aims of HECFI as a vehicle for economic activity and downtown renewal.
