Vancouver still most liveable city in world: Survey

Vancouver still most liveable city in world: Survey

ReutersApril 30, 2010

Vancouver has again topped a list of the top 10 most liveable cities in the world, giving the Canadian west coast city an extra boost as it opens the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In the annual survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Vancouver scored 98% on a combination of stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure -- a score unchanged from last year. The city has also topped the index since at least 2007.

In the 2010 ranking, there was little change in the top positions with Vienna, Melbourne and Toronto still taking the second, third and fourth positions and the top 10 dominated by Canadian and Australian cities which took seven of the 10 slots.

...

BEST CITIES TO LIVE IN

1. Vancouver, Canada

2. Vienna, Austria

3. Melbourne, Australia

4. Toronto, Canada

5. Calgary, Canada

6. Helsinki, Finland

7. Sydney, Australia

8. Perth, Australia

9. Adelaide, Australia

10. Auckland, New Zealand

WORST CITIES TO LIVE IN

1. Harare, Zimbabwe

2. Dhaka , Bangladesh

3. Algiers , Algeria

4. Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

5. Lagos, Nigeria

6. Karachi, Pakistan

7. Douala, Cameroon

8. Kathmandu, Nepal

9. Colombo, Sri Lanka

10. Dakar, Senegal

Mmm. I believe it. Today I did nothing but patio surf, drink, and take pictures down by Canada Place. 'Tis the life!

This is very odd. The EIU had already released their survey for this year back in January.

The Mercer study for 2010 has yet to be released this year but should be unveiled sometime soon.

I find Vancouver a great city don't get me wrong, but I never got why it was the #1. The biggest problem with it is the affordability issue. Sure, there may be some neat ethnic groups, shiny new architecture, grand parks, nice arts and culture, beautiful scenery, outdoor activities, great public transit access but when most people can't afford to live there, it's a problem.

That's not really an issue that affects livability, as, if you are here and enjoying the city being #1, you are affording it. And living very well.

^You have to be able to live there to be able to enjoy it, and if the vast majority of non-Vancouverites can't move and enjoy it, then it is a huge break to the livability of Vancouver. I could say the same about San Francisco, Manhattan, London, etc.

Yeah, it's a bit of a downer. But they don't live here, and thus don't count in the livability surveys

Being unaffordable has nothing to do with how livable a place is. I'm not saying it's not a problem... but it's not related.

Other than the fact that being #1 makes it desirable and expensive.

Who woulda thunk that Calgary ranks in the top 5 places in the world... probably not anyone from Vancouver.

Not me, either. That right there makes you question the validity

Judging by your name we're probably neighbors. Unless your name is actually Wentworth and that's not where you live.

Then we're probably not.

as well, i find vancouver like some other big cities where you are kinda fine if you were born here. A lot of the people that find it okay and 'affordable' grew up here and their parents and even themselves may have had property early on in life. And speaking for myself, I live apart but I certainly had parental help to get me started with property.

Good day neighbour. If I see anyone surfing SSP on their iMac at the Starbucks, I'll assume it's you.

There is an inverse relationship between liveability and affordability. I'll leave it at that.

(This would be for a 2 storey home, top line, and bungalow, bottom/heavy line..)

Such a typically douchy, condescending Vancouverite comment toward another city.

There is a certain irony to the fact that so many people in Vancouver think Calgary is a completely unliveable city, yet the same survey they use to prove Vancouver's superior livability shows Calgary not far behind... I just assumed he was trying to underline this irony.

I agree and it's something that I continually wrestle with living here. the study does not factor in housing costs, nor does it factor in livability in terms of weather or, dare I say it FUN!

And in terms of arts and culture, the city is lacking. It is, though, clean, relatively safe, stable and just plain nice.
