Cayuga, ON

Cayuga is a community on the Grand River in Ontario, about 45 minutes south of Hamilton and about 15 minutes north of Lake Erie.

Cayuga was the seat of Haldimand County, until Haldimand County and neighboring Norfolk County to the west were merged to form the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk in 1974. The nearby town of Simcoe became the regional seat at that time. In 2001, The regional municipality was dissolved, and the former Haldimand County became a single-tier municipality, similar to an independent city, called "Haldimand". The name was immediately changed to "Haldimand County", making Cayuga the administrative center of the City of Haldimand County.

Pretty much. But I wish I had gone through a few years earlier and seen the original hockey arena in town, which was built in 1922 and one of the oldest in all of Canada. It was torn down about 5 years ago after the new one that I have a picture of was built.

My family has a cottage in Port Colborne on Lake Erie, so I always go up in August for a little while. I have a somewhat physical job, and I was sidelined last August with a foot injury. So I went up, not being able to work. But since I had a foot injury that couldn't get wet, I couldn't go in the lake. So I decided to explore while I was up there. I had read about Townsend, so I set off to see it. I gave myself a little tour of Cayuga, since it was a former county seat.

I have a few questions for you, knowing that you live there now.
~ How long does it take you to get to different points in Hamilton, or to get to Brantford?
~ How far west on Highway 3 have you ever driven? How long did it take you to get there?
~ Have you lived in Cayuga long enough to remember the old hockey arena? Apparently it was one of the oldest in the world, until it was demolished a few years ago.

I had no idea the Cayugas got up that way. Nice tour Matt, with plenty of good info as always.

My cousins had a Potato and Onion farm in Heally. It went under in the 90's and is now a corporate Pig farm. The house they lived in was really old. It was taken apart and moved to Stratford ON. There were whisky and brandy stills in the Barn.
