Explore southern Taiwan with new flights to Kaohsiung

THE NATION
KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN

KAOHSIUNG, the second largest city of Taiwan, has been selected as the newest destination of Thai Smile, the sister airline of Thai Airways International.

The inaugural flight between Kaohsiung and Bangkok was launched on October 1.

Thai Smile is attracted to the city by the increasing number of Thai nationals travelling to Taiwan following Taiwan’s granting of visa-free privileges to Thai visitors.

Under the agreement, Thais are allowed to enjoy the benefits if they stay in Taiwan for not more than 30 days. However, the Thai government has not returned the favour, which is normally reciprocated.

The new daily service sees passengers with Thai Smile’s A320-200 with full service. THAI takes responsibility for marketing the service.

Before the inauguration flight, Thai Smile and THAI also signed a cooperation agreement with Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corp providing passenger with service to its 12 stations. Travelling by high-speed train from Taipei to Kaohsiung takes only about 90 minutes.

Passengers of Thai Smiles who opt to travel in Taiwan by high-speed trains will enjoy discounted tickets, thanks to the agreement. A representative of THAI said the specific discount amounts have yet to be discussed, while the rail firm announced during the signing ceremony that they could be as high as 53 per cent off normal fares.

Wit Kitchathorn, THAI’s general manager for Taiwan said the parent company had suspended flights to Kaohsiung about 14 years ago due to an outbreak of SARS disease. The number of Thais visiting Taiwan has almost doubled in recent years, after the free visas were granted in 2015.

Last year, about 190,000 Thais visited Taiwan, Wit said, and it seems that number was already surpassed by the end of August this year.

THAI and Thai Smile see much potential for Kaohsiung to become a popular tourist spot for Thai tourists. Taiwan’s “New Southbound” policy has spearheaded developments to attract foreign investors and visitors. The policy is aimed at increasing cooperation with countries in the South.

Previously, Thais who wanted to travel throughout Taiwan landed in Taipei and then went to other cities including Kaohsiung before having to return to Taipei to catch a flight back to Bangkok. A Thai visitor can now land in Taipei Taoyuan International Airport and travel to other cities and have more choices for their flight home. They could choose to fly with Thai Smile from Kaohsiung International Airport or with THAI from Taipei.

“Therefore, they do not have to waste their time travelling back and forth. Their travel in Taiwan is easy because the high-speed rail system has connected all the cities,” Wit said.

Tzu-Wen Tseng, director general, Tourism Bureau of Kaohsiung City, said the number of Thais to Taiwan has increased thanks to the visa-free scheme.

She welcomed Thai Smile’s newest service, saying her city has been more than ready to welcome tourists from Thailand with its excellent accommodations, trains and taxis, as well as tourist attractions such as temples, street food and shopping areas.

About 120,000 Thais came to Taiwan in 2015, rising to 190,000 the following year after the free-visa scheme came into effect.

Tseng admitted that her city needs more tour guides to help tourists see the sights. Local guides must be Taiwanese and pass an examination.

To alleviate this, Tseng said the city is implementing a short-term measure of recruiting Thais who married a Taiwanese person and had changed their nationality.

As well, the city’s tourist website will add content written in Thai so tourists could make their own choices.

The city has many restaurants and a reputation for particularly good seafood and other local dishes, Tseng said. But tourists wanting Thai dishes, will find hundreds of restaurants serving them.

Located at the southern tip of the island of island, Kaohsiung is the business hub of that region of Thailand, with many locals working in factories in the city and along the coast.

Visitors to the city are invited to check out the top of Kaohsiung 85 building, the second-highest building in Taiwan to enjoy a sunset over Shou Mountain and view Kaohsiung Harbour and the beautiful scenery of Love River.

The elevator is the world’s second-fastest lift, reaching the 75th floor in only 43 seconds at 600 metre per minute.

The Dome of Light at Formosa MRT station is also worth a visit for photo taking as it is spectacular with the largest glass work in the world, designed by an Italian artist.

Another popular destination is Fo Guang Shan Buddhist temple with its 108-metre-high sitting Buddha.

Jeju Air to open route to Taiwan's Kaohsiung next month

2017/06/21

SEOUL, June 21 (Yonhap) -- Jeju Air Co., a South Korean budget carrier, said Wednesday it will open a route to Taiwan's Kaohsiung next month, the first such service offered by a local airline.

The move is part of local budget carriers' efforts to expand routes to Southeast Asia and Japan not only to absorb growing low-budget travel demand but also to offset sharp declines in travel demand from China amid a diplomatic row over the deployment of a U.S. anti-missile system in Korea.

Beijing banned the sale of travel packages to South Korea starting March 15 in protest against Seoul's deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

It has argued the X-band radar system that comes with THAAD could spy on its military though Seoul and Washington have said the system is purely aimed at countering North Korea's missile threats.

Jeju Air said it will start operating the Incheon-Kaohsiung route Tuesdays and Fridays on July 4.

In 2016, the country's six budget carriers -- Jin Air, Jeju Air, Air Busan Co., Air Seoul Inc., Eastar Jet and T'way Air Co. -- transported 56.8 percent of the passengers on domestic routes and 19.6 percent of the passengers traveling abroad. The figures were up from 54.6 percent and 14.6 percent a year earlier, respectively, according to the transport ministry.

Last year, passengers on domestic routes jumped 11 percent on-year to 30.91 million and passengers on international routes climbed 19 percent to 73 million, the ministry said.

T'way Air to open flights to 2 Taiwanese cities from December

SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- T'way Air Co., one of South Korea's six budget carriers, said Friday it will operate routes to two additional cities in Taiwan from December as part of its service diversification plan.

T'way Air plans to assign the 189-seat B737-800 passenger jet on the routes from Incheon to Taizhong and Kaohsiung four times a week from Dec. 15, the company said in a statement.

The low-cost carrier now operates 19 B737-800 jets on four domestic routes to Jeju Island and 44 international routes to 29 cities in eight countries, including Guam, Saipan, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It currently serves two Taiwanese cities -- Songshan and Taipei.

South Korean airlines have diversified their routes to offset lower travel demand from China amid ongoing political tensions between the two countries over the deployment of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system in South Korea to deter North Korean provocations.

In March, Beijing banned the sale of group tour packages to South Korea in an apparent retaliation against the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, which it argues can be used to spy on its military.

China Airlines launches flights to Japan on bear-themed plane

May 26 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) on Friday launched flights to Japan on an aircraft featuring three cartoon bears that represent Taiwan's Tourism Bureau and Kaohsiung City as well as the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto.

Dubbed "Buddy Bears," the jet decorated with images of "Oh!Bear," "Hero" and "Kumamon", which are mascots for the Tourism Bureau, Kaohsiung City, and Kumamoto Prefecture respectively, carried 158 passengers to the Japanese prefecture on its maiden flight.

CAL is the only Taiwanese carrier that flies to the prefecture.

The Boeing 737-800 plane will provide three round-trip flights per week between Kaohsiung and Kumamoto, CAL said.

In the future, the aircraft will also fly from Kaohsiung to Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa, it said.

The airline said the debut of "Buddy Bears" plane is part of its goal of elevating its presence in Kaohsiung and developing the market for Japan-bound departures from the port city in southern Taiwan, thanks to strong demand there.

According to the airline, the five Japanese destinations it flies to from Kaohsiung -- Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka, Kumamoto, Okinawa -- have all achieved load-factors of up to 80 percent during the peak season.

Passengers flying on the decorated plane will be offered an array of products with a bear theme, including paw-shaped cookies for business class passengers, and bear-print wet tissue and headrest covers in the economy class cabin.

CAL is hoping the popular bears will help it attract passengers on the flights.

Malaysian airline to begin Kaohsiung-Manila direct flights on Oct. 30

AirAsia offers discounted fares with single-trip tickets starting from NT$388

By Teng Pei-ju,Taiwan News, Staff Writer

Low-cost Malaysian Airline AirAsia announced Thursday it will begin direct flights between Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Manila, capital of the Philippines from Oct. 30.

In order to celebrate the company’s second flight route departing from the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung, AirAsia will offer discounted single-trip tickets starting from NT$388 (US$12.5), tax not included, for trips occurring between Oct. 30, 2018 and March 31, 2019, reports Apple Daily. Tickets will be available through the AirAsia website starting on Friday until Aug. 19.

AirAsia said there will be three flights departing from and arriving in Kaohsiung every week once the route is open. A single flight trip is expected to be two hours.

Chen Chang-hsing (陳長星), AirAsia’s sales manager in Taiwan, said the demand for direct flights between Taiwan and the Philippines has been high since the company began to offer flights between Taipei and Manila as well as Taipei and Cebu in 2016, with passenger loads reaching 90 percent on average.

The passenger load of the Taipei-Clark flight has also surpassed 80 percent after its opening on July 12, added Chen.

According to AirAsia, the number of Southeast Asian tourists visiting Taiwan exceeded 1.2 million in the first half of 2018, with Taipei being the most popular destination and Kaohsiung standing at second.

AirAsia to launch flights from Taiwan to Boracay

Low cost airline AirAsia announced that Monday it will reinstate flights from Taiwan to Boracay on Oct 26

By George Liao,Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2018/10/08 23:58

(Taiwan News) -- Low cost airline AirAsia announced on Monday that it will launch flights from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport and Kaohsiung International Airport to Boracay, as scheduled to reopen on Oct 26, according to a Central News Agency report on Monday.

AirAsia said the flights from Taiwan to Boracay will stop over in Manila, adding that it will offer at least 20% discount flight tickets to customers in the Taiwan market, the report said.

Discounted tickets for flights between Nov 6, 2018 and Mar 21, 2019 will be available for sale from now to Oct 21, with a one-way ticket selling for NT$2,696 before tax, the carrier announced.

Boracay, an internationally famous island resort, was closed by the Philippines government on April 26 to rectify the environmental pollution problem that was caused by overdevelopment and tourism. The government has recently announced that the island will be reopened to visitors on Oct. 26 and there will be a limit on the number of visitors, according to the report.
