Some archival photos from around Nova Scotia (gallery is here):

Halifax looking east near Barrington and George circa 1940

Dennis Building

Old apartment and industrial buildings near the ferry terminal, 1950's

Looking across the south grounds of Province House

The description said this building, torn down when all of Buckingham Street was destroyed for Scotia Square around 1960, was built in 1818. Some of the detailing looks much later though.

Hollis Street. The two buildings on the right are still there but the rest were torn down for the Royal Bank office tower around 1960. The building on the left corner was the head office of the Royal Bank from around 1870-1910.

Birney streetcars on Barrington Street. These buildings are mostly still there.

Granville Street, I would guess around 1900.

Barrington Street

Barrington Street

Yarmouth, NS

Sydney, NS

Windsor, NS

The older people here often joke that we built New York. In truth, we only ever accounted for a small percentage of the workers there - but that small number was hugely significant locally. It was basically, for us, the Alberta of its time. I have a couple of uncles who did it for a while. Anyhow, happened upon a little documentary about the b'ys. I didn't realize it was ever officially noticed in this regard by anyone outside.

A personal one for me. The little flatiron-shaped intersection at the entrance to my neighbourhood. The intersection of Harvey, Freshwater, Parade, Lemarchant, and Long's Hill.

Then:

And now, following a 1990s fire that destroyed the entire area.

Love the gas pump right on the sidewalk. Wish we still had those.

Nice, it's more like the mid 70s though, Fenwick wasn't built until 1971.

A before/after via FB. The same block just after the 1892 Great Fire, and what replaced it.

Via FB, the Battery:

"Today" (2013):

The metal guardrail in the first pic confuses me, did that really exist back then? And, if so, why? Cars would've been very few and far between on the island at all, let alone heading out the end of the Battery.

That's... wow. Even at our peak in the early 1900s, we were 1/5th of that in terms of amount of stone and urbanity. That's, to my understanding of the world, a Quebec City-sized core.

One more then/now. Someone who knows cars can tell me when this pic (from FB) was taken:

And a couple days ago:

All in all, a BIG step up. Mary Brown's (Newfoundland's equivalent of KFC) used to have such a prominent, DT location? Wow. I much prefer all the elevated things there now.

I wish the old photo still showed O'Brien's Music. It's marketed as the "Oldest Store on the Oldest Street in the Oldest City in North America". Not true, of course - but it has been there for generations. And Water Street (back then known as Lower Path) was almost certainly the oldest proper street on the continent. It was also a path behind the seasonal fishing stages before people settled and over-wintered here.

That picture of Toronto is only about 12 years old. So much has changed since then.
