Could be wrong, but I think work has started on a portion of the park that is on the Arkansas flood plain across from downtown. Crossed over the bridge today and it looks like they've been laying the foundation down for a bike/walking trail.

Now that Phase I of the project has officially entered the leasing stage, Smith and his partners, Robert E. Mallory and John H. Dicken Jr., have their sights set on the next phase, which will include a courtyard, pool and 5,000 square feet of speculative retail space with a patio.

City gets new proposals for Downtown high-rise

The Commercial Appeal:

Quote:
More firms have expressed interest in building a large convention hotel Downtown since Memphis city officials widened the search for a developer last spring.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland singled out the interest in building a hotel as a bright spot for the city during a civic meeting Tuesday night.

Strickland said “two or three” firms have submitted separate proposals for a hotel near the Memphis Cook Convention Center and their interest shows the vitality in the city’s economy.

It was the first indication the wider search has attracted more potential hotel developers.

No timetable is in place to move ahead on a new hotel to accompany the Sheraton, a 600-room hotel fronting Memphis Cook on Main Street.

After convention industry officials in the city insisted Memphis needs at least 1,000 adjacent hotel rooms to attract bigger trade shows and meetings, Denver hotel consultant Robert Swerdling raised the idea of a new hotel late last year. He proposed a 600-room tower.

Strickland, after the civic meeting Tuesday, told The Commercial Appeal the “location is a challenge” on the site identified by Swerdling.
Swerdling’s proposed hotel would occupy city-owned land across Front Street from the convention center.

Friends For Our Riverfront, a Memphis historic preservation group, have said they would fend off construction in court because the site was designated by city founders as part of the promenade. The promenade was intended to be left open forever as a public walkway along the riverfront, members of the group have said.

Memphis entrepreneur Carolyn Hardy, chair of the Greater Memphis Chamber and an advisor to Swerdling on the proposed hotel project, said the inaction since then has not led Swerdling to withdraw his proposal.

“He’s still active. He’s still interested,’’ Hardy said Wednesday. “This project moves so slow I can do it in my sleep. My goal is to work with Bob, and work through Memphis and not become discouraged.

Memphis Cook is proceeding with a facelift and renovation while St. Jude Children's Research Hospital expands nearby into the Pinch District.”

I wonder is St. Mary's Catholic Church willing to sell their property to a hotel developer. Prime location from what I see.

Wasn't there a proposed skyscraper residential tower there that was killed off during the recession if I recall correctly?

This is it. I forgot the name of it, but I remember first hearing about it 2005/06 I believe on the news.

Also found a old Memphis proposed scraper looking for that one above. Would of been a interesting building if It was built and lasted until today.

This was the Trinity Tower project, which was slated to include a 28-story residential high rise built with self-sustainability in mind. I believe there is still interest in putting some kind of development in place of the surface lots surrounding St Mary's, but like with most projects that were either stalled or cancelled altogether because of the recession years ago, those plans are always subject to change.

That's really cool. Did it happen to say when it was from and where it would've been?

Ahhh yes. I remember this along with the original proposal for One Beale, the Horizon (second tower)?, the tower that was proposed where Gayoso Flats currently is, and maybe one other...I wish we could have gotten at least one of those. I want to say another was proposed just west of I-40, but I might be not be remembering that correctly.

I'm excited to see what comes of the hotel tower development.

Also excited to see phase two of 266 lofts gearing up. While small, that phase will have a pretty solid impact on the streetscape and provide some ground level retail.

Nope, in the article where it was published in 2009 on the flyer the guy says he believe it would have been on Main Street or Front Street. Wish it was more info.

A new convention center and accompanying hotel(s) between Union and Beale would sure help with those issues . Have said it numerous times, sure your sick of it. The famed 201 temp housing facility needs relocated somewhere else more central in town.

Glad it doesn't look tacky or new aged. It looks more appropriate for buildings on that side of town.

Frontier has seemingly added Orlando out of Memphis with little fanfare. It seeming compliments Allegiant schedule filling some of their blanks. These were bookable at Frontier's website for 11-2 onward.
