Visionary Redevelopment of Airport Lands Honours Former Mayor

October 29, 2012

Blatchford selected as the name for the airport land redevelopment.
The mayor who helped put Edmonton in Canadian aviation history books is being honoured. The redevelopment of the City Centre Airport will be named Blatchford, after Kenneth Blatchford.

Blatchford served as Edmonton’s Mayor from 1924 to 1926. He played a vital role in making Edmonton home to the first municipally run airfield in Canada in 1926.

“Edmonton was a pioneer in Canada’s aviation history,” said David Weir, Chair of the City’s Naming Committee, which approves names for municipal facilities, new neighbourhoods, parks and roads. “Naming the area Blatchford recognizes an important chapter in our city’s history.”

I like the new name given its historical significance to the city.

On another note, I hear that the Envision Edmonton Opportunities Society is now lobbying the city to get a street named "Charles Allard Way" somewhere in the new development.

EPS and city one step closer to new home for Air-1

The EPS could be very close to finding a new home for it's chopper fleet.

Air-1 and Air-2 need a new facility once the city centre airport closes next August, and it looks like the decision has been narrowed down to a couple of locations in Edmonton.

"There are some options that we're looking at right now," says EPS Acting Inspector Blair Edl, "The city has access to, or currently owns some large pieces of land that we're looking at, the area structure plan in the surrounding area will play a big factor in what we choose."

Edl says it's important for the EPS and the city to have a facility inside of Edmonton, that's why the decision was made to look for locations in Edmonton.

"If we were housed at the International Airport, or even Villeneuve Airport, we would be quite a distance from the city, and our response time would increase accordingly. Our goal is to maintain an efficient response time to provide that type of service the citizen's expect of EPS."

The next step is to choose a location, then have it approved by Transport Canada so that a launch facility and fueling station can be built. (lk)

GoA is talking with DND about using Namao. There is plenty of runway there for what the province operates and contracts.

My money is on the province and RCMP moving to one of the new hangars at YEG. I have heard rumblings to this effect and it would make the most sense.

Makes more sense to keep Air 1&2 on the north side.

To move fixed wing air ambulances to YEG requires massive road improvements IIRC according to the Health Quality Council. Cheaper alternatives are being seriously explored first.

Now if only there were tiltrotors that didn't crash all the time and require way more maintenance and training.

How about "Harrier Jet" air ambulance service? Arnold can give flying lessons.

Interesting about the FOIP request for environmentals. Someone wants to do some muck-raking?

Was invited to a fun lunchtime session for this today. Basically to flush out why people might like to live here, what we like about plan, what challenges/opportunities does it present and how we would graphically represent a 'blatchfordian'.

Master plan done in early 2013. Zoning work continues. Construction could start as early as 2014 with 1st residents 2016/17.
