I wonder if they have any tenants lined up for the commercial units.

Sometimes I just have to stop and remind myself that this is Hamilton...Hamilton, Ontario!

Twenty years ago, a lot of people had this city dead-and-buried. I never completely and totally gave up but I sure as hell didn't see this happening.

What really works in this building's favor is that there really isn't anything else in the city with the same design aesthetic...

Put up that original facade already, will be the real eye catcher once installed!

Huge win. What's most amazing is that when you pass it on James, the tower doesn't loom over the street. Its the best historical preservation I've seen.

I agree, the set back is perfect. Could put towers like that anywhere in the city and I wouldn't complain

yes! I just walked by here today, and the first row of stones has been set!

Not quite sure how they are going to anchor the stones.. looked up close to them and you can see some detail in the middle of the stones

Walked by this evening and I noticed that they're sealing off the unclad bits of the tower with dark grey aluminum panels. Looked pretty decent but was too dark for a picture. They should have more up later this week.

The stone looks interesting. It definitely doesn't look new.

I am a little confused with the stone.. they stated they were going to clean it, but a lot of the stone is still stained black, and the parts that are new are very light coloured.. the original stone is a yellowish grey colour with what looks like soot or grime stains on them..

maybe they'll powerwash them when they are up? I dunno.. You can see the original stippling details inside the stone have really eroded away over the years too, whereas the new pieces are very stark in their freshness by comparison..

was able to get a closeup to take a look at it.. I'll really have to see how this looks like pieced together.. it's impossible to gauge at the moment all in pieces..

also was able to see how they are anchoring them - the stones appear to be hollow like cinderblocks, and they anchor a metal piece they connect to the jutouts on the building into the interior of the stone, pretty cool stuff!

makes you wonder if maybe they should have just requarried the whole thing.. from what memory recalls they had to do restoration on 2/3s of the face..

I'm just worried that it's going to look tired.. or a weird mishmash.. guess we'll just have to wait and see!

still makes me cringe to see what they were allowed to do to the facade..

a postcard of the original look:

I really like the white details above the windows..

and then a look at time taken its toll a century or so later:

if you look closely you can still see the supports left over from where the college sign was on the facade on the lower right.

whats interesting is that it matched the original lister block design, which was changed when they rebuilt it after the fire.

and the proposed:

yeah see that's what I was talking about- the stone on the far left is clearly new, and you can see the ones near the middle are blackened..

it's a shame the stippling technique has faded so much on the blocks that you can barely see it - basically they draw a frame inside the block and then poke a bunch of depressions all over the surface to give it a rough look

you can see an example done on some of the restored portions of the parthenon:
