I would say they build towards the Hill Country area of San Antonio because it's most beautiful.

I could understand that in the case of the mid-rises that are popping up, but a lot of these tract 2-4 story developments just seem... weird.

I like the plantation-style of building-- in the sense of a big footprint building gleaming in the center of a green hill. Not houses wrapping around a hill like they've in Portland on Mt. Scott.

I have no problem with sprawl i can afford the gas. and i realize that building a new development on a flat piece of land is just as bad as leveling a hill and paving over it...but still it just looks nicer to keep the hills and just build where its flat...for example the rim just accross I10 i didn't bitch about that since there was no nice scenery that was there beforehand..

There are plenty of other hills that you can look at.

While Houston itself is no honey in the looks department, there are beautiful forests within spitting distance of the belts.

That being said, I wish San Antonio were more proactive and eager to preserve its edge of the hill country.

Netherlands-based developer Wereldhave has broken ground on a new mixed-use project dubbed éilan. Located on 120 acres of land at Loop 1604 and La Cantera Parkway in Northwest San Antonio, the project will include 1.8 million square feet of space - of which about 1 million is being built on a speculative basis. Approximately 500,000 square feet will be set aside as 500 for-rent residential units. A high-end boutique hotel of between 150 and 200 rooms will encompass 150,000 square feet. Also included in the project are two Class A office towers totaling 200,000 square feet and a 7,000-square-foot marketing center. Retail space and a boutique grocery store will together total 75,000 square feet. The éilan will feature an amphitheater with seating capacity for 1,000 people as well as a 6,000-square-foot nondenominational chapel. Wereldhave will build most of the buildings within LEED sustainability specifications. An electric trolley will run through the property. The éilan's first building is slated to open in spring 2009.

Wow, this got WAY off on a tangent. None of us have seen the topo plans, so we dont know how much (if any) they are planning on leveling things out on that piece of property. The whole thing could be built with the existing topo in mind, rendering the last page of posts nil.

Also, they did not level a hill to place those new apartments at the entrance to Crownridge. The apartments are called Verde Ridge and I moved there Nov. 1. I pay a nice premium, for my unit because it offers a 'hill country view' which only exists because my unit is, wait for it, on a hill. What was probably confused for leveling of a hill was the initial removal of vegetation and cutting through rock to lay utilities. Additionally, there's no way I am getting out of the complex during ice conditions because of the hill I'm on top of out here.... the hill that was never eliminated.

The same company that built and installed this trolley is also the same company that will build and install the trolley at Eilan. So it may very well be the same type of trolley as this is another trolley they built and installed in a development in Baja California.

By the way, this looks like a really nice project. Interesting design. I just hope it matches the style of architecture with quality. With a European developer it should be authentic (I hope). It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
