Demo Work to resume in mid October

Word on the street is that demo work will resume in mid October per the terms of the contract. The previous GC could not mobilize the necessary man power for the project. A new GC has been selected so expect to see workers back on site soon. This project is still a go!

Update on Canopy Hilton Project

From the San Antonio Express News
By Richard Webner
October 8, 2017

Canopy by Hilton hotel

What is it: Chris Hill, the owner of Esquire Tavern, plans to build a 197-room, 138,000 square-foot hotel on East Commerce Street downtown.

Original plans: Construction was expected to begin around August of last year.

Current status: Demolition of a building that was formerly on the property is almost complete, and construction of the tower is set to begin in the next few weeks, said Patrick Shearer, president of Hill’s development company. He expects it to be complete in late 2019.

Hill parted ways with the project’s original general contractor, Harvey-Cleary, which is being replaced by Sundt Construction, Shearer said.

“We just feel like it would be a better fit for the next stage of the project,” he said.

Explaining the delay in the tower’s construction, Shearer said, “this is a complicated building on a tight site, and it’s taken some extra time to make sure we get it right. But we’re ready now.”

Construction has resumed at the Canopy Site

On my return today from lunch at the Pearl, I noticed handful of construction workers present. It seems as if they'll be resuming work pretty soon. Hopefully a tower crane is on the way since they looked like they were prepping a base for one.

That's great news. Thank you for sharing. I was just there two days ago. I cannot help but know how narrow thing building will be, which makes it especially more ingesting. It's going to be one beauty on the River.

I get the feeling this one might actually turn out better than the renders. Hope so. Although I still don't like that corner staircase. Seems like a wasted opportunity for something more interactive with the street... even if it's a tamale stand.

I think for them, there was no where else to put it, safety wise... which i mean kind of makes sense looking at the rendering.

At least that's what I tell myself to justify it. .

I can't believe it's almost been a year since they started construction. That delay they had was really bad. I am shocked they didn't cancel it altogether. Thankfully for us, they didn't. I love this building. I canopy wait to see it rise. I am thinking it's going to be similar to Countyard in slenderness, and I love that building. I am betting this building will be half way to topping out by June. That's my prediction (I was only off by two floors for the Frost lol, which is one of the slowest projects I have ever seen for how important it is).

Still digging around. You can see the Rio Rita Cistern from the Civil War era Alamo Fish Market. It will function as a centerpiece of a restaurant.

The site has been largely dormant for two months except for a little digging around on the street level where the sidewalk used to be to put in what appears to be some underground electrical lines. I'll walk by the site in a few minutes.
