Terracotta army to hit Vancouver’s streets





In the past, Vancouver’s thoroughfares have been adorned with colourful fibreglass orcas, bears and eagles — street sculptures that have caught the attention of snap-happy tourists and locals alike.

But this year, street art goes from depicting creatures native to this province, to subterranean terracotta warriors buried 2,200 years ago in faraway China.

Altogether 33 warriors will be placed in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond (one is going to Whitehorse in Yukon) over the coming months. On Tuesday, 29 of them were on parade, fittingly in Chinatown’s Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden on East Pender.

The warriors — each painted by a different artist — will be auctioned off Sept. 27 with the proceeds going to the BC Lions Society Easter Seal Houses and Easter Seal Camps for children with disabilities, said Stephen Miller, the society’s president.

The Vancouver Sun and 32 other businesses and organizations have sponsored the creation and painting of the warriors in designs and colours ranging from subdued to beyond flamboyant.

Liu Fei, consul-general of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver, was on hand to see the warriors unveiled.
