This forum is intended to be about more than just skyscrapers, despite its name. Read the blurb at the top of the discussion pages: "The global membership discusses development news and construction activity on projects from around the world, alongside discussions on urban design, architecture, transportation and many other topics."

Forced to choose, I'd rather have a great streetscape with retail and pedestrian activity than a bunch of tall buildings that sit atop dead streets. But they're not mutually exclusive-- when done right, each helps the other.

If you're looking for urban living and walkable areas you need more density. If you want more density you need more people, if you want more people you need more places to live or work, if you want more places to live or work in a dense area you need to build up. Density and towers generally (not necessarily) go hand in hand.

Yeah it looks like a cheap spin off. No zones, you plop down the buildings you want... Part of, er most of, the fun in sim city is the challenge of building a vibrant dense city. This new one you control everything built... No thanks.

Ya, I appreciate the dynamic factor of SimCity. I like how no two cities will ever look alike and how your manipulation of property values and transportation is what determines what gets built. It is always great to watch a blighted low-income community go turn into a dense high-rise area after dropping a few subway stops nearby, adding a couple parks, and rezoning some neighborhoods to commercial. Just like real life...go figure.

On my ride from Tempe-downtown Phoenix it was about 2:45 and there was not very many people. However, when I took the light rail back at 4 from downtown Phoenix, it was very crowded. All seats were full and several people were standing. It wasn't back to back full but still very crowded. From my opinion, I think it looks like the light rail is going to be rather successful here in Phoenix. Especially in the next 10 years or so when more transit-oriented developments are built up around the stations.

I too am impressed by the numbers. I wonder if there are any official counts. Every time I ride, even during off times and weekends, it is well filled. I almost always have to stand, which I don't mind. I also see that all the time, seats are offered to women, children, or elderly.

I heard official counts won't be out until mid February, but preliminary estimates show between 20,000-30,000 daily riders so far.

How do they count ridership? Simply through fare revenue (ticket purchases)?

The article I read said that there are electronic monitors at every door that count how many people get in/out. It'll be a good way to see how many people board and how many people are actually paying as well.

Officials: Light-rail ridership meeting projections

Quote:
Metro light rail estimates it is on track to meet or beat its ridership projections for the year.

The agency puts out its first official monthly totals in the middle of next month. But based on estimates, Metro believes its daily ridership from Monday of this week to today ranges from 20,000 to 30,000.

The monthly totals will be based on automated counters in train doorways. Metro did a first-week estimate to give an early snapshot on ridership.

Metro had projected that the 20-mile system that connects Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa would average 26,000 daily boardings per work day in its first year. Metro opened on Dec. 27, and this week was its first full week of paid service.

Metro expects a bump in ridership when Arizona State University students return to class later this month. Metro runs near ASU's Tempe and downtown Phoenix campuses.
