That elevated highway and those parkings lots have to go. Until then, that view will remain depressing and ugly.

^ You see ugliness where I see potential. The highway will yield to a lovely urban boulevard and high-rises. The parking lots on the right are slowly turning into mid and high-rises. The parking lot on the left is to become a large urban park. In this photo we also have a perfect view of the Bell centre towers and the future CF phases. The only thing in this photo that will not change is the railroad viaduct, but I reckon it'll look cooler when eventually surrounded by skyscrapers and parks.

Exactly what I also think !

The parking on the left you're talking about will become a urban park eh ? Didn't knew it.... it tought the one few meters away that is supposed to be in the middle of the new Bonaventure boulevard would be enough for this area...

A gorgeous summer day in St. John's. I took SO MANY PICTURES and, although this will still be a big, TO-style post (not complaining, BTW, I love it!), I've cut it down to these.

Skipper and his missus were sot up in one of the busiest intersections in Rabbittown right at the bottom of my street reading the paper.

Walking downhill toward downtown. I really love the change that's happening lately where people are going SUPER bold with their colours. It was always bright, but the colours were just more saturated versions of normal, suburban colours. Since the suburbs are now that colourful, homeowners downtown are going all out.

My favourite thus far is bright purple with powder blue trim and orange shutters/door.

Skeets guarding the stairs to bum smokes from folks descending to the downtown.

It was so nice to see a few people on the go. The city has felt deserted with all the 8C weather over the past few todays. It was still a little dead by the time I got to go downtown, but I cherished every minute just the same.

Wing'in It is a VERY popular and expanding local wings franchise, and it's close to new Gower Street, which cuts through Old Town with its modernity.

The Queen's Road Store has been a local landmark my entire lifetime, and probably much longer. It's not quite a dep like our superettes, but close.

George Street was pretty full for before end-of-workday, which was lovely. And although it wasn't hot enough for the hotties to have their shirts off, at least they were out.

Take it off!

This is not a self portrait:

The corner of George Street, Water Street, and Beck's Cove.

Looking down Water Street toward Fortis Place:

Ziggy Peelgood's, man. You don't even know. Fries, dressing, and gravy at 4 a.m. on George Street. Yes, ma'am.

My ratio of visible minorities to whites in many of these photos is higher than the city's average, BUT that's how it was in the downtown today. Very nice to see!

It's tobacco, though. Not weed.

Water Street East, heading away from the bustling area.

A couple of violinists were out doing their thing.

The steep stairs next to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland:

Heading toward Harbourside Park and the National Memorial Memorial. We could hear bagpipes, apparently there was an impromptu session on the go. Some hipsters even joined in with drums.

Like a dream, b'ys.

I took about 10 photos of the crowd playing the bagpipes. I chose this one for an obvious reason.

Heading back uphill and home. A view toward the National War Memorial from Duckworth Street.

Metroverse. At all the bus stops, they have excerpts by local writers. I love this city.

Not mine, but a friend just shared:

It's on the modern side of Empire Avenue (our ring road when we joined Confederation, the other side of it is all generic suburban).

People here love a fire because everything is wood with a tar roof.

EDIT: Wonderful update!

Some pictures of Memorial Day in St. John's today.

Quote:
The stars shone so bright that last of June night,
In our trenches we crowded like cattle;
But sleep wouldn't come as I lay with my gun,
For tomorrow we face our first battle.

As the morning sun danced o'er the green fields of France,
The captain said, "Boys, no more sermons;
The talking must stop, now it's over the top,
We must take this land from the Germans."

The craters they grew as the mortar shells flew,
The ground like the back of the camel;
With orders in hand, we crossed no man's land,
Near the town that they called Beaumont-Hamel.

We came under fire as we cut the barbed wire,
My comrades are falling by dozens;
These corpses I see are not strangers to me,
But uncles and brothers and cousins.

Only one tree, that's all we could see,
Only one shelter from danger;
Only one tree, that's all we could see,
As we faced down the guns of the stranger.

There's pain in my back, and the sky's turning black,
Though the Angelus bell's not yet ringing;
My hand is all red where I just touched my head,
And somewhere a choir's softly singing.

As I lie in the mud, the memories flood,
And that old danger tree's silhouetted;
In it's shade I'll not rest, though I gave it my best,
For Newfoundland, lest you forget it.

The rest:

Just wanted to get into the Canada Day spirit. After seeing the number Canadian flags flung over patios, garage doors, and cars around the neighbourhood I felt the need to get a little more patriotic. So I flipped through the flickr account and found some Canada:

Absolutely amazing St. John's pics, as always.

If I could find a Mrs Right from St. John's I swear I would relocate there in a heartbeat, never look back, live there, die there of old age.

... you don't happen to know anyone, do you?

In casual speech, I think most people are more likely to say "Canada Day" than "Memorial Day". The former is the reason it's a holiday, and that's why most people talk about it. Also, it feels unnatural to ask people what fun shenanigans they have planned for Memorial Day, though I understand that's become normal in the U.S.

But officially, it's both. Canada Day and Memorial Day. The latter is older for us (97 years for Memorial Day, 65 years for Canada Day), but younger overall.

And thanks. I'm so glad you like the city!

I most definitely do!

And would like it even more, if some well-meaning architecture-crusader terrorists blew up The Rooms. Just floating the idea out there.
