In the mean time the two agendas of Central Government should boost transportation infrastructure of Port City with Hinterland.

1. Dedicated Freight Corridor along Mangalore-Bangalore-Chennai announced by Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda

Quote:
“I am planning to push for the Mangalore-Bangalore-Chennai freight corridor. We have to work out the details with the state government, the Union Surface Transport and Shipping Ministry. Similarly, Railways is also planning to implement the ‘Coal Corridor’ connecting coal mines to thermal plants,” he said.
Hopefully this should free existing railway track for passenger traffic.

2. 13 degree Latitudinal Expressway along Mangalore-Bangalore-Chennai announced in 17-point agenda of Prime Minister

Quote:
Laying stress on connectivity and power with “service goals” set to improve transportation within the country, it proposes a network of coastal expressways on the east and west coasts, connected to each other through latitude expressways (to be called Akshansh Marg Expressways) at 13 degrees, 15 degrees and 17 degrees.

Along with this state government also expressed some more interest in improving internal connectivity.

Thokkottu-Konaje is one more road needing expansion. This is needed for improving connectivity to IT SEZ.

DC also said that according to the PWD, a four lane road will be substituted in place of the existing Thokkottu – Derakalatte road in the additional cost, which will be sanctioned soon.

State hits trifecta on Akshansh project
Quote:

The project envisions a network of roads that include two north-south expressways on the western and eastern coasts of India, connected by three east-west expressways that will be on the 13th, 15th, and 17th degree North parallels.

Smart City plan: Mangalore banks on 2 hamlets
Mangalore pitching for Smart City scheme

Population is the issue for Mangalore even though thickly populated areas like Ullal, Mulki which are continuity of Mangalore are still outside Mangalore City Corporation. Still Mangalore has advantage on following grounds compared to many of other cities of South India.

1. Availability of International Airport with good traffic.

2. Good per capita income compared to other cities of the state except Bangalore. This will ensure return on investment to private players of smart city domain who want to provide relatively costly facilities.

3. Availability of plenty of water to cater to the need of growth in population as an effect of becoming smart city. If goal of the smart city is to ensure growth of population in cities where water is available easily then Mangalore has a definite advantage here.

4. Mangalore has already won so many awards on sanitation front. Sanitation awareness is high.

5. Healthcare industry is well developed in the region.

6. Coastal region of Karnataka has already surplus power although the power preferably supplied to other regions of state. And if power is produced by importing coal or gas then Mangalore has port for it. As port, power plant and consumers are staying nearby there will not be much transmission loss. Also Mangalore an advantage of saving on transportation of fuels being a hub of petrochemical industry.

7. Mangalore has many well known pilgrimage centers in its vicinity.

8. Growing Petrochemical Industry although PCPIR tag is missing.

9. Moreover India needs more coastal cities like China if it wants to compete with China on export.

But foreign investors seems to be more interested in investing in the region were they have made investments in industries already. In this case Mangalore has disadvantage. The UK may be a option as it has invested through a few companies here though insignificant.

One more main disadvantage is poor road infrastructure. If smart city means investment in road then Mangalore needs it.

But as land is costly no new industrial city can be developed easily. So the current Mangalore itself has to become smart.

One more point in favour of Mangalore to be smart city is Mangalore falls in proposed coastal expressway and Akshansh Marg Expressway at 13 degree.

Smart cities - Mangalore as a port city of Karnataka

More or less Mangalore will get into the list of 100 smart cities project of Central Government. Karnataka will get 7 out of 100. Many countries have come forward in participate in 100 Smart city project and finalized cities they will take up. Wonder which country will invest in Mangalore. Kuwait could be one such country as it is picking up stake in petrochemical industries here. A few more gulf countries have come forward to invest in industries like petrochemicals, LNG terminals here. Let us wait to find out which will invest on Smart city project.

Better if Mangalore together with Udupi should be considered as a port city. And funding is needed for laying Mangalore-Udupi Metroline.

City to get two air quality monitoring stations

So air pollution is going to be monitored smartly.

Not getting idea on how Smart City fund will be used. Are they going to lay fresh utility lines by digging a tunnel on main roads?

There is news on spending more money on UGD. And laying underground electrical cables.

The state government is proposing Bengaluru-Hassan-Mangaluru Industrial Corridor. Read.

If this along with 13 degree Latitudinal Expressway along Mangalore-Bangalore-Chennai materializes then it will be great for further development of coastal city.
