It's a '28 or '29 Ford pick-up. The step in the cowl is the giveaway. The five globe Llewellyn is standard issue with a complete globe on top but in this case somewhat obscured by a four sided frame on which street names might be attached. In this case it doesn't appear the street names have been mounted and may never be. A similar arrangement appeared briefly on Wilshire and on Broadway. I always liked the way they looked but apparently they were hard to read from a moving car. And of course, by this time, the Llewellyns were on their way out, being replaced by taller and brighter alternatives.

MR-- Hmmm now I see the full globe within the "bowl" of what you might call the street-name frame....

You've obviously never dealt with Lucas electrical systems :-)

Cheers,

Earl

Edit: Sorry, Wig-Wag, missed your earlier post. The standard joke about Lucas electrics in the SF Bay area was:

On a beautiful day, a guy and his girlfriend are driving along the Nimitz freeway in Oakland in his MG. Girlfriend looks across the Bay and says "It looks like its about to rain in San Mateo." Car coughs and dies.

First thing any sensible person did upon getting a British car was to replace all the ignition leads.

.

And today's humor award goes to: Earl, LOL!

I had a similar thought about that, too, thanks for elaborating on it!

You don't suppose the woman was in the car when that happened, do you?
It doesn't really look like it was parked.

I wondered the same thing Martin Pal. If she was in the driver's seat she was awfully lucky to be alive!

Thanks Gaylord Wilshire and Michael Ryerson for the information on the Packard Dealership photograph. (location and the globe)

Can anyone tell me why this rather small place needed such an oversized cooling tower?

Thank you. I have a special fondness for roadrunners, since they regularly come striding through my yard in search of mice and lizards. Amazing creatures close up.

Cheers,

Earl

Earl, on one of our family vacations out west back in the 1960s, I remember a road runner running along the side of the road going as fast as our car.
(is that even possible? I was only 6, so my memory is..well...hazy)

A roadrunner can go about 20 MPH and a coyote can go twice as fast. However, the roadrunner has an advantage when he's in danger on the ground. He can fly. (He just doesn't feel like it most of the time.)

murdalize

[QUOTE=mrfredmertz;7738069]Thanks for the reply, Martin. The network I am writing this for would murdalize me if I gave away the pilot details but suffice to say it's very noirish and set in the 1930s. I am also one of the producers of the new Robert Downey Jr. version of "Perry Mason" which is very, very noir and set in the 30s. It's being written by Nic Pizzolatto, who created "True Detective," one of the best detective series I have ever seen on television. NLA is a never ending font of information and I marvel at the ability of the folks on here who can pinpoint a location from a mere fragment of a building in a photograph. That's why we love this group and all of your august and arcane knowledge.

Well, mrfredmertz, you've certainly got us all intrigued now.
And in related news, "murdalize" is now my new favorite word.

It's been a while since we've had an industrial subject from Julius Shulman. This is "Job 3105: Eugene Choy, American Electronics Plant (Fullerton, Calif.), 1960". I've included both of the color images and a selection of the black & white ones. The dark area under the zig-zag roof is a pool.

The zig-zags continue at the side.

The reception area.

A workshop.

I'm guessing that this is some kind of motor winding or transformer coil.

I'll finish with this laboratory shot.

All from Getty Research Institute

The building at 1600 E Valencia Drive, Fullerton now seems to belong to Graphic Tech. With the exception of the pool and the small walls, all the exterior details seem to have survived. Eugene Choy obviously liked the zig-zag roof design, because you can see a variation on his Cathay Bank.

I'm certainly glad the zig-zag canopy has survived.

Is the shorter one on the side still there too?

Close. This source says 1949:

"Tourists who came to the Sunset Strip hoping to see the stars at play could also tour adjacent Beverly Hills, where the stars lived, with the aid of a handy map or guide. The streamline-moderne Berman Furs Building can be seen in the distance. Holiday magazine, 1949."

It's Sunset at Cory Dr, not "Corcy".
