I had to take my Mother up to Ithaca for a day last weekend. I sneaked away for about 45 minutes and checked out some new construction in the city. There's also a couple of other pics. Here goes:


Downtown:

Cornell University

Gates Hall, Bill Gates & wife donated $25 million towards this one. Morphosis Architects (Thom Mayne) designed this rascal. Just one of the new buildings going up on the Cornell University campus.

Next is the huge (for Ithaca - over 1,200 beds) housing project Collegetown Terrace. It is located between the Six Mile Creek gorge and State Street on the south end of Collegetown.

Yeah, especially in the summer. Gotta say I don't miss the long, gray, snowy winters.

Thanks for the pics! Lot of construction going on. I like the contemporary theme of the architecture, not a lot of faux traditional stuff.

Princeton is on a bit of a building kick as well, but less extensive it seems.

Relative to its size, Ithaca is about as good as it gets in the U.S.

I know there are big residential plans for Collegetown too. I hope to get up there soon.

Wow. I thought Geneva looked like it was doing better than when I was there in college in the 90s, but Ithaca looks like it's exploding with growth.

Well, ain't she pretty? Ithaca is looking on the up-and-up. You're shot looking up at Collegetown is my favorite.

BTW, Morphosis was a finalist in the contest to design the Eli and Edyth Broad Art Museum in East Lansing (Zaha Hadid ended up winning he contract). It seems that colleges are a big part of their business.

Did you swing by the Commons and check on the rebuild? The utility work is supposed to begin this week or next. Sounds like the next 6-12 months will bring construction projects that will dwarf what's currently going on. City getting better all the time.

^ I didn't get a chance to walk the Commons, but I did see some of the work, it's going to be quite a change. I think I'll have to visit the old stomping grounds more often to keep up with all the development.

Thanks guys. I know this wasn't much of a tour, I just wanted to get a few shots of some of the new construction. I hope to get back in the not too distant future for a more comprehensive tour (including gorges and waterfalls).
