Re: Old Calgary movie theatres

Hey everyone, I'm trying to put together a book proposal that looks at Movie Theatres in Alberta, and I was wondering if a few of you might be able to help me out. I'm looking for photos of some of Calgary's long-gone movie theatres but since I'm in Edmonton, and unable to make it to Calgary for a while, I was wondering if someone should shoot a few snaps for me...

I have the following addresses of the defunct theatres but have no clue what was built on the site after they closed. Could someone help fill in the blanks?

KINEMA 1804 14 St SW (operated from 1933-1955)
HYLAND 1229 9 Ave SE (aka Garry aka Italian Cinema) Obviously in Inglewood...
ISIS 1 St @ 11 Ave SW
EMPRESS/HITCHIN' POST 221A 8 Ave SE (1940-1959)
CAPITOL/PANTAGES 230 8 AVE SW
ALLEN/STRAND 119 8 AVE SE

Because most are along Stephen Ave and East I was wondering if some of these original buildings still exist or have they been torn down/encorporated into the redeveloped structures like Epcor Centre, Glenbow Museum, etc.

Thanks in advance!

PS, Obviously the Palace and Showcase Grand I'm aware of but new photos would still be greatly appreciated... Cheers, Ian W.

Also, if any of you are familiar with Red Deer, Medicine Hat or Lethbridge and some of the defunct theatre locations, I'd greatly appreciate it as well... I already have consulted Mike Rivest's online guide but some of the info is either missing or inaccurate so any help clearing up the confusion would be great! Cheers again!

"Hyland" is still standing, is a store, but rumored to be going back to being a venue of some sort.

Kinema/Isis/Empress/Capitol/Allen - all torn down

There was also the Marda/Odeon Theatre on 33rd AVE SW (1953-88) and the Tivoli on 4 St. in Mission (1936-90). The Variety Theatre was located at 200- 8AVE S.E.

This thread is depressing haha

Marda is gone, Tivoli was turned into shops, Variety torn down

So out of 13 old theatres, 4 still stand, 1 being used as a theatre, although 99% of the original interior was gutted (Grand).
Also the old Opera house on 6th ave and centre. Demolished.

Kinema is the development where Moti Mahal is now.

Old-school movie houses in Calgary still operating as such are just the Uptown and the Plaza but you're obviously aware of those.

Moti Mahal? It's been a few years since I was in Calgary, is that on the east or west side of 14th St. south of 17 Ave?

Btw, in regards to the more modern yet closed complexes does anyone know what's occupying their sites now?

Southcentre-Indigo books, right?
Market Mall-Was it an H&M or American Outfitters?
Westbrook-Dinner theatre, I read...
Bankers Hall-Office space on the 4th floor?
Esso Plaza-expanded food court?
Brentwood?
Marlborough?
Sunridge?
Southland?
London Town-Sobey's on site now...

Btw, what's the latest on Eau Claire? Is demolition going ahead this summer/fall or has that been postponed because of the recession?

Yup, London Town Theatre building was demolished, and Sobeys has now built a grocery store on the site.

I believe that Old Navy took the majority of that space over, but the theatre entrance was around the corner nearer the food court (beside where Blacks is, IIRC).

And the theatre that was at Northlands is now Golds Gym.

According to my dad there was also one on 33rd Ave around 20th street at least into the mid 70's, not sure the exact address but he thinks its probably where Treo is being built.

CAPITOL/PANTAGES 230 8 AVE SW was torn down when they built Scotia Centre.

There used to be theatres in Calgary Place across from the Westin.

Don't forget North Hill. It was a great single screen theatre with large curved screen.

The latest that I've heard is they've postponed the project until the economy recovers. The city reallocated the funding from the plaza project to fund some of the work on the Devonian gardens in the past few weeks as well, so there likely won't be anything happening for a while

I hate to say good, but good. I kinda have a soft spot for the not so old mall... Although I agree it does have its problems, I'd like to see it retained and remodeled rather than completely demo'd....

Oh sorry, I put the smiley in because the forum required at least one character outside the quote. I had entered my reply in bold form. I'm not sure on the status of Eau Claire.

Oh and the former Southcentre theatre site is to become a Crate&Barrel, opening this fall.

Blacks is the entrance for the old Famous Players at Market Mall.

The Sunridge theater is where the Calgary Life Church is IIRC.

It's called the Calgary Life Centre, but it is a church, yes.
