stockbox grocers is a convenient miniature market that is packed inside a reclaimed shipping container and placed into the parking lot of an existing business or organization.
the stockbox team (michael brooks, jacqueline gjurgevich, carrie ferrence, and eliza michiels) have proposed for dozens of these stores to be located throughout urban food deserts, and within walking distance of home, work, and school.
the small stores are are designed to offer the essential grocery items and fresh produce communities need to get through the week. across the U.S. a growing number of people live in 'food deserts' which means they don’t have access to healthy and affordable food within walking or biking distance of their home.
stockbox grocers responds to this need with a miniature grocery that’s tucked inside a reclaimed shipping container and placed into the parking lot of an existing business. innovating on the espresso stand model to build stores throughout urban communities, and provide fresh produce and grocery staples to those who currently without access to good food, where they live.
Jean Nouvel’s Shipping Container Restaurant Sprouts on Seguin Island in Paris

Last year, we announced French architect Jean Nouvel's master plan for the renovation of the Seguin Island in western Paris. The massive plan includes a mix of culture, commerce, and green spaces with music halls, artist studios, museums, and even hotels and cinemas. Phase one of this sensational overhaul was recently completed, and a giant greenhouse and restaurant called Les Grandes Tables has sprouted within a set of recycled shipping containers - read on to learn more!

last monday, japan times reported that miyagi, one of the three tohoku region prefectures hardest hit by the march 11 earthquake and tsunami, has completed construction of temporary housing for people affected by the disaster, leaving fukushima as the only prefecture yet to meet that need, as iwate finished such construction earlier.
people started to move into the final six buildings to be completed, comprising three stories — unseen in other disaster-hit areas — for 144 households in onagawa. the town, surrounded by mountains, decided to build multistory structures in a ballpark to make full use of available flat land.
Re:START Shipping Container Mall Opens In Christchurch But Faces Lawsuit

The renewal of Christchurch, New Zealand after a devastating earthquake just took a huge leap with the opening of a pedestrian shopping mall made from shipping containers. The brightly colored stacked boxes hold 27 stores as part of the City Mall Re:START project. Thousands of visitors flocked to the temporary mall’s opening to enjoy the café, the large pedestrian area and two horse-shoe shaped pavilions. The mall offers a bit of normalcy to the residents, and some serious contemporary eco-style.
Vissershok Container Classroom / Tsai Design Studio
Located in rolling hills of Durbanville wine valley on the outskirts of Cape Town, Vissershok Primary School is a rural school dedicated to the children of farm workers and underprivileged communities living in Du Noon – a poverty-stricken township several kilometers away. Sponsored by three South African companies – Woolworths, Safmarine and AfriSam – the Vissershok Container Classroom is a 12 meter recycled container that was converted into an independent classroom for 25 Grade R (age 5-6) students. responding to the powerful tectonics of the chilean andes, 'casa oruga' makes use of modular shipping containers to create habitable volumes that streak the landscape with soaring lines. the configuration allows the external air to run smoothly and easily through the all house and its different parts in order to avoid mechanical cooling.with regard to the former, the strategy to achieve the proposed integration to the territory, consisted in placing the volumes of the house as if they where resting on the slope and allowing the volumes, lets say; to be blended by the slope.

vancouver's new low-income housing development is made of 12 recycled shipping containers
the 12-unit complex, built by the atira women’s resource society, is the first in canada to be made from recycled shipping containers sourced from the port just across the railroad tracks. each has its own kitchen, bathroom and laundry, and was created to provide affordable housing for women older than 50 in the low-income neighbourhood.
in order to qualify, potential tenants can’t earn more than CAD 34,000 per year.
the project has been met with criticism. 'these studio apartments range from 280 to 290 square feet, if we were to build similar housing for disadvantaged people with units from scratch, it’s about CAD 225,000 per unit. the container buildings are about CAD 85,000.' says city councellor dr. kerry jang. 'take a look through this building and you’ll see that it’s livable.'
Boxman Studios recently installed the interior centerpiece for a new 165,000+ SF building in downtown Raleigh. When complete in 1Q2014 the Citrix building at Hargett and West Streets will house the divisional headquarters of Citrix’s ShareFile business and about 500 employees. This is a redevelopment project of the historical Dillon Supply Steel warehouse in industrial West Raleigh. The two acre site is adjacent to the planned Union Station rail complex. The site also includes a new 500-space parking deck.
Designed by Alliance Architecture of Durham, the Citrix building echoes the industrial roots of the location with the modernity of a LEED Gold structure. The focal point of the building’s interior is a 4-story atrium with stacks of intermodal shipping containers modified and erected by Boxman Studios to create eight large, high-tech conference rooms in two towers separated by an elevator.
Boxman Studios took 16 containers and modified them extensively in order to stack in pairs four tall. Twelve 20’ length containers combine in pairs to create six conference rooms 20’x17’ and four 30’ length containers combine to create another four larger conference rooms. The ends of each container are glass. Boxman’s project manager Austin Hill says the fabrication generated practically no waste; the removed container parts for this project have already been integrated into another LEED Gold project in San Francisco.
Playing on the industrial theme, the building’s original gantry crane will be positioned above the containers, connected by cables and appearing to be moving the containers into place. In reality the structural engineering dynamic of the offset fashion of the container stack require that cantilevered containers be supported by tension rods to the building superstructure above. H&H Engineering of Charlotte is the structural engineer for the container project. RCI Builders, of Thousand Oaks, CA is the general contractor for the tenant upfit.

Welcome to "Frau Gerold's Garden," a leafy urban oasis in Zurich made out of shipping containers. Such temporary hipstervilles, which combine trendy shops with food, music and urban gardening, are popping up all over the world -- but also priming the areas for development and gentrification.
what no mention of downtown brooklyn's dekalb market? it ran from summer 2011-12, until it got booted out to make way for the citypoint redevelopment. although i think it always was sponsored by these developers. good use of shipping containers.
heres a current ny container trend project, new this summer, pier57 near the southend of the highline. like dekalb market, its another temporary gentrification placemarker, held in place before the pier gets redeveloped:

Hong Kong-based architects OVA Studio designed Hive-Inn, a wild-looking concept hotel made from colorful shipping containers. Designed as a submission for the Radical Innovation Awards Competition 2014, the bold Jenga-like structure is made of pieces that can be swapped out depending on the hotel's needs. Each shipping container is themed in the style of a famous international brand, from Ferrari to Louis Vuitton, to give hotel guests the opportunity to build a closer bond with their favorite trademark name.
