I remember back in the 1990s, the Harris PC government at that time did a review of speed limits on 400 series highways. I'm pretty sure that most of those highway were designed for 120 km/h. They obviously decided against changing the limits as studies had recently come out showing Ontario's highways to be the safest in North America.

The eastbound collector lanes opened last night through Mavis Road. I took a bunch of photos of the construction this morning, but I'm going to start first with this one:

Why did MTO close down the express lanes then?

they are going to reconstruct the express lanes. They'll be closed for more than a year. From the looks of things traffic should be shifted to the westbound collector lanes in as little as a couple of weeks. There's just some concrete to pour between the off-ramp to Mavis and the Southbound->Westbound on-ramp.

Franklin Boulevard Overpass (Cambridge)

The new overpass is almost done. Isn’t MTO supposed to fit 10 lanes under that overpass in the future though? I’ve been back to KWC recently, and there doesn’t seem to be space for that.

I'm not sure how to respond. Do you think they didn't measure or something?

The new overpass doesn’t seem long enough to allow 10 lanes underneath (unless we reduce both left and right shoulders to 20 cm).

Lol. Did you measure before you made that supposition?

The new overpass will for sure support ten lanes

Lol does measuring by eye (while going at 95~100 kph) count?

Today I realized one thing: 427 - 409 serve as the effective collector lanes for 401 between 427N and Martin Grove.

Ps: 401W is completely closed Fromm Hurontario to Mavis in Sauga.

Once the collector lanes in Mississauga are done, the only place missing them will be 905 East (up to Oshawa). With the railway right to the south, though, we might be looking at a (2+2)+(2+2) configuration...

Tonight I noticed that the ramp from 401E to 403W (410S) is opened.

It’s been a while since I heard about crossover collision on the stretch between GTA and Eastern Ontario.

It seems that the high tension cables are doing their job.
Still, that was too close for comfort...

Good. Infrastructure projects, especially those already planned/underway shouldn't really be at the mercy of a change in political leadership.

Too bad this isn't always the case, but it's good to know this project will survive.

It's a long way off but I am looking forward to a HOV lane between Kitchener and Mississauga. Will make getting to Pearson much easier as a Londoner.

I agree. I am really looking forward to improvements to the 401 between Kitchener and Mississauga. I find it to be a pretty painful drive these days.

The 401 is going to be pretty cool between Kitchener and Mississauga once it's all improved. There is going to be a three level interchange with Highway 6 North, a new flyover for Highway 6 South. Whatever ends up getting built for GTA West will probably be a cool interchange, and if they ever get around to finishing the flyover to Highway 8 West from the eastbound 401, it's going to be a hugely impressive bridge.
