They are doing work on it but mostly on the ground; things like pipes, caissons, boreholes, ect.. Ultimately, the voters will yield the power to let it rise. Lets hope the imbecile public doesnt turn it down. There are some that favor this, but like anything else, the public doesn't know a good opportunity if it hit them in the face.

This project is screwed then if it's up to the public.

How could anyone be in favor of this project?

I'm looking at it from the point of long term economic growth for the area. In terms of jobs, taxes for the city, tourism, etc.. Plus, the design looks nice. IDK, I just don't see what's wrong with it. I would understand opposition to the new Nuclear Plant units over at Turkey Point but not this project. Its not Vegas looking either. If I felt the design was more suitable for Vegas, I would oppose it but it looks classy IMO.

Architect Tries To Block SkyRise Referendum

Quote:
Architect Charles Corda filed a lawsuit this week that seeks to block an August referendum on SkyRise Miami.

Corda says that he supports part of the plan that will see Bayside renovated, but opposes linking the renovation to SkyRise.

An online petition created by Corda garnered just 314 signatures. Corda cites traffic, noise and pollution along with the potential for a financial burden and gambling in the tower as the reason for his opposition.

Judge dismisses SkyRise lawsuit; activist appeals

Quote:
A Miami-Dade Judge on Wednesday denied an activist’s push to quash a voter referendum on a 1,000-foot tower on Biscayne Bay.

In his ruling, Judge Jorge Cueto sided against Coconut Grove architect Charles Corda, who aimed to strike an Aug. 26 ballot question seeking voters’ approval of both a lease extension and expansion of Bayside Marketplace and the erection of SkyRise Miami.

Corda argued in a petition he filed last month that the Bayside lease and SkyRise project were unrelated, and therefore legally should have been placed before voters as separate ballot questions. Cueto disagreed, saying that SkyRise, as a sublessee of Bayside, is indeed connected to the marketplace.

Corda, who named the city of Miami and the supervisor of elections in his suit, swiftly filed a notice of appeal.

Voters Approve SkyRise Tower In Landslide

Quote:
Miami voters have overwhelmingly approved Jeff Berkowitz’s plan to build the 1,000 foot SkyRise Miami tower.

With 91 of 137 precincts reporting, 68% of votes cast were in favor of a new lease for SkyRise and Bayside, with just 31% voting no.

Earlier today, the Third District Court of Appeal ruled against activist Charles Corda, who had sued the city over the ballot language of the SkyRise lease amendment. That leaves Berkowitz in the clear to start construction.

This comment from "Obviously" on ExMiami.org explains my sentiments on this horrible decision!

Oh great, a place like Seattle has it’s beautiful Space Needle and tasteless buffoons in Miami settle for the first ugly POS this guy presents to them.
The FAA says Brickell One at 1049ft is an interference but this giantass 1000ft ugly toenail clipper isn’t?
WTF kind of drugs is the entire city of Miami on?

I hope Berkowitz can never raise the $400 Million from overseas investors to build this "monstrosity" Take this crap to Orlando or Atlantic City!

Extra info (Completion date and construction details):

Voters give SkyRise Miami liftoff

Quote:
Miami voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly endorsed SkyRise Miami, a swooping observation tower and tourist attraction proposed on a spit of land behind Bayside Marketplace.

The public supported the 1,000-foot tower — coupled with a long-term lease extension for Bayside’s operator — by a roughly two-to-one margin. The vote gives developer Jeff Berkowitz the green light to begin construction and triggers a $10 million upfront payment to the city of Miami.

At a campaign party held in a private room at the Hard Rock Cafe at Bayside, Berkowitz declared victory upon the release of only early and absentee voting tallies, which favored the agreement by more than 70 percent.

“It’s a mandate,” he said. “Up, up and away.”

Berkowitz said the SkyRise team would get to work next week reconfiguring utilities that serve the Bayside marina, which are currently under the pier where the tower will be built. The pier will then be excavated and a foundation can be laid, which he said should take about nine months.

He hopes to complete SkyRise — a hairpin-shaped tower with observations decks, an upscale restaurant and a ballroom — by the first half of 2018. He plans high-altitude attractions, such as a Tower of Terror-like ride that drops 50 stories along the tower’s shaft. There’s also the possibility of a casino if the Legislature ever allows it.

One day in the future we probably could not imagine Miami without Skyrise. This is what people thought back in the day about the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris: "We, writers, painters, sculptors, architects and passionate devotees of the hitherto untouched beauty of Paris, protest with all our strength, with all our indignation in the name of slighted French taste, against the erection … of this useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower … To bring our arguments home, imagine for a moment a giddy, ridiculous tower dominating Paris like a gigantic black smokestack, crushing under its barbaric bulk Notre Dame, the Tour Saint-Jacques, the Louvre, the Dome of les Invalides, the Arc de Triomphe, all of our humiliated monuments will disappear in this ghastly dream. And for twenty years … we shall see stretching like a blot of ink the hateful shadow of the hateful column of bolted sheet metal."

The difference is this is further to the east in terms of FAA approval.
