There was a biker gang hit in Montreal yesterday or the day before. Murders in that city are up about 5 or so compared to last year. So the overall total is around 30 as opposed to 25.

It seems like there has been a slight uptick in organized crime murders this year - biker gangs and mafia.

The per 100,000 murder rate will still come in around 1.5 though.

Last year was 24 but that's also including 2 deaths from 2016, so 22. We're at 30 now which sucks, I was hoping we'd aim for under 20. With that said, I was near the area when it happened. I wasn't scared cause living in the states I was used to it, but it was a first for me in Montreal. Quite frankly, St. Leo has become a pretty sketchy place the past couple of years as well, lots of gangs and it doesn't feel as safe anymore.

Winnipeg is much smaller than Montreal but has almost as many murders. I am sure they have had more murders than MTL in the past.

#31 in Montreal, once again a shooting in St.Leo

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/one-dead...nard-1.4230383

The second victim passed away, #32 for MTL. 10 more this year than last year.

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/updated-...ting-1.4230383

Edit: Both killed were Hell's Angels members, so three murders in a few days of H.A members.

This just happened on Christmas’ Eve, in Richmond Hill.

It’s (unacceptably) scary.

From what I can figure both Vancouver and Surrey are at 15 each. Windsor has had a rough year with 6 for the metro area of 300k. London is still at 4 bring it in at 1.0.

Actually, Windsor metro is about 350,000 now according to the last estimate. It certainly has been a rough year here, with almost all of the homicides being drug related.

St. John's ends the year at 2 (I think), which is about our average but I think we've had 3 for the past few years so I guess homicide rate is down ever slightly if you squint.

You're very optimistic about how peaceful tonight is going to be.

So what's a murder? When someone has the intent on killing someone and they die? Or if someone dies irrespective of the other persons intent, such as a bar fight and someone dies from a punch to the head? But then if that's the case wouldn't deaths from impaired drivers etc be "murders"?

This explains the differences, including the last one. A drunk driver killing someone, while not called murder and not counted in homicide statistics, often results in similar sentences to manslaughter. Murder carries an automatic life sentence, manslaughter doesn't, but murder is much harder to prove due to the intent aspect.

Downward trend in Edmonton as well.

27 this year, down from 42 last year. Highest was 48 in 2011.

It`s great to see those downward trends for some key western provinces but Western and Northern Canada along with Northern Ontario will always have a higher murder rate than the rest of the country. One thing all these areas have in common is a higher Native population and Natives are more likely to be the perpetrators and victims of violent crime. It`s a sad reality but a reality nonetheless.

Second of two police shootings resulting in death in the last several days in Edmonton. I see Calgary had one as well. Wonder what’s causing this all of a sudden ?
