The sloped portions at the top are generally meant to hide the air conditioning, ventillation and other mechanical equipment which SF's current planning department requires. I don't think they'd approve a flat-topped building with that stuff visible.

That said, I agree with you that the building isn't as wonderful as some have said, but I appreciate its height. It's just one more sign that SF is getting over its anti-height fixation of the 60's and 70's. And I like the "Manhattanization" of Mission St. It's becoming a real concrete canyon a la NYC. This building adds a lot to that, but of course the 850 and 1000 foot structures that have been proposed as part of the TransBay Terminal project would (literally) cap it off.

They are pouring the foundation pad TOMORROW 6/16/06 I was told yesterday by one of the workers. That should be pretty spectacular--traffic could get nasty on Mission and Fremont.

I don't know. The mean security men might not let you in. Then Eddo has to go all medievil on em and start calling supervisors and stuff!

Looking forward to seeing this one pierce the sky...

I went down there, but it wasn't happening. I guess the steelworker who told me that was blowing me off

Shouldn't be long, though.

great pics. webcor says they have 2 tower cranes planned for the 645' tower portion of the project. i wonder where the second tower will go considering the site is awfully constrained.

Second tower?? Two cranes perhaps, but only one tower on this one. "A spacious glass atrium will connect the tower to an 11-story residential space next door; retail shops will be at street level."

The Webcor site says, "We currently have 2 tower cranes planned 2 double man lifts for the high rise and 1 single car for the mid rise."

Sounds to me like the "mid rise" 11-story section, taking up the rest of the site, will have its own crane.

Did the concrete mat pour happen this week?

I didn't make it down to 301 Mission but WOW, the area around the Market near Powell and Grant was jumping today--midtown Manhattan level crowds. Could that many people be here for the gay parade?
