Bah, it's been discussed a little bit in the thread already.
This is no Far West, and if you compare European murder figures to those of the US, then you've got to come to that conclusion: yes, gun control does seriously avoid quite a significant number of murders. The difference is even spectacular, I believe. That said, crime rate in these areas (mostly a large part of the northern suburbs) is obviously much higher than in random, regular ones so to say, especially drug dealing. And chances to get mugged at night or even in the afternoon when gangsters are up and out are obvious. They want you phone, your credit card, stuff you're carrying, maybe your car... That's it.
