Found this good shot on flickr of Boston's new Big 3 tower. The building is stunning, masterminded by the same architect who came up with the John Hancock Tower 40+ years ago! Triangular shaped, it's another geometric masterpiece for my city.

I would love a list of cities with most of thier top 5 tallests built in the past decade or so. Austin would crush it.

4 years ago I posted a list of cities sorted by date of completion of thier tallest, but it's out of date now. Thread here - http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=213657

13 out of Miami's tallest 15 were built in the last decade (14 out of 15 since 2003) and 23 out of the tallest 26 have been built the last decade.

Miami Dade County has 58 (by my most recent count) completed or under vertical construction 500+ footers. In 2000 it had 4.

What is fueling this continued Miami boom? Still a lot of laundered drug money? Or is it because they are allowed to take deposits to fund construction and I believe no other state besides Florida is allowed to finance that way.

Wait they can actually spend deposits on constructing the building? Like there's a chance you wont get it back if things go under?

They take deposits (this last boom usually required like 50% deposits so it is a big chunk of money) but they usually use that to help get the bank loan. This last boom was generally almost exclusively foreign investment (mostly South American flight capital) that bought all the units which when built are usually rented out. Many towers don't get built and when they don't, deposits are returned.

Of course the down payments get returned if the project doesn't happen

Maybe the rest of the country should learn from Florida's business model of pre-funding construction just look at how Miami is booming, i'm just surprised other Florida cities aren't booming too

El Paso recently broke ground on a new tallest, WestStar at Hunt Plaza.

- 306 ft, beating out the current tallest (Wells Fargo Building) by four feet.
- first office tower to be built in Downtown El Paso since 1971.

Using the deposits to satisfy a lending requirement is standard practice as far as I know. That's a lot different from actually using a purchaser's down payment as construction financing which is why I was surprised at the previous statement.

It can and will snow in the mountains. Sierra Vista, AZ is just as southerly and I've seen snow in the mountains there on several occasions, and maybe even once or twice in the town itself.

El Paso sits at an altitude of around 3000 feet. I was there for New Years once a few years back (cousin was stationed at Fort Bliss), it was cold.

I'm not surprised to see snow in the mountains, but it looks like there's a dusting on the rooftops as well.

I see from the climate data that temperatures in El Paso can regularly drop below freezing on winter nights though - just wouldn't have expected that on the Mexican border.

Winnipeg Skyline from Ballpark

Too bad that ballpark is oriented the wrong way with that new tallest that would have been a pretty bad ass skyline view.... Congrats on getting a new tallest! Nothing really to report on San Diego for now, a new tall will be breaking ground in April. 7th and Market will post some pics.
