SEPTA green lights new bus route for Philadelphia

SEPTA’s board approved a new bus route Thursday to connect residential neighborhoods like Grays Ferry and Brewerytown with University City.

The rail agency’s board voted unanimously to accept a plan for a Route 49 bus, which will also travel through Strawberry Mansion and Fairmount. The seven-mile route will begin operating on a trial basis in early 2019.

No! Aren't the trolley's some of their better performing routes?
Don't worry about it. Septa may fail to reopen "temporarily closed" trolley routes for eternity, but I believe they are done suspending ones that are currently operating.

SEPTA badly needs new leadership , along with NJT and DRPA to a lesser extent all these agencies suffer from a lack of forward thinking , poor planning and costly mistakes like not replacing all the older Suburban Train cars...even though they were warned numerous times..

Good news for the regional rail service. Looks like 15 new locomotives are replacing 8.

"SEPTA’s Regional Rail Ridership has grown by more than 50 percent over the last 15 years,"

Not really a fan of the styling of the ACS-64 but that's neither here nor there and it's surely an improvement over the older locomotives. My biggest question though is why the insistence on operating the electric services with loco hauled coaches instead of EMU's?

Because locomotives and coaches are cheaper to operate and maintain than EMUs. the biggest difference is that each EMU is considered a locomotive and has to be inspected as such.

The loco hauled trains are typically used on express services where there wouldn't be a notable performance advantage to using EMUs such as the Great Valley Flyer and Trenton express trains.

Be careful about what you wish for. DRPA is the pits, they don't know what they are, and by their make up they can't get away from politics and are deeply in debt. SEPTA could use some fresh blood, but I'm not so sure about wholesale changes. Present management certainly is afraid of any forward thinking in terms of expending the network, even simple extensions to the rail system and starting a new bus route seem to take many years and endless study. But present day SEPTA is so much better then what we've had in the past that care is needed that the hard fought gains aren't lost by someone's wishful thinking. SEPTA is working on dealing with many years of next to nothing in terms of maintaining their system, and its only been in the past couple years that new sources of regular funding has opened up; now they can at least think about do we fix A or B, where before it was maybe we can patch A next year.

What I'd suggest that SEPTA needs is more support on and in the political front, more state funding for new projects and extensions.

Is anyone here familiar with the abandoned North Broad Concourse? If so, does anyone know if there is a connection to the abandoned Arch St subway line inside?

I don't think the Arch St subway construction made it all the way to Broad or even past about 13th St.

Ghosts Of The Abandoned Arch Street Subway Line | HiddenCityPhila.org

"Just two short underground segments were excavated under Arch Street before the war: one between 12th and 13th Streets that is 263 feet long and the other between 10th and 11th Streets that is 126 feet long. These large areas were likely proposed stations for the line. Two metal grates in the Arch Street sidewalk are the only entrances into these discarded tunnel sections."

No because the Arch St Loop was never completed. Just this and one other short section nearby.

Hidden City Philadelphia

Here's a map of the concourse itself:

There were covered entries to the small completed sections but they were permanently sealed earlier this year after some lamebrains gained access from the street in broad daylight.

1. the Wawa line is coming along well:
http://septa.org/rebuilding/pdf/elwy...ect-update.pdf
2. I passed by and it looks like the parking garage and station reconstruction at Ardmore has started, with the parking lot blocked off and construction equipment on site.

Phoenixville Eyes Extending Manayunk SEPTA Line

http://planphilly.com/articles/2018/...cture-is-built

"They say they can build three simple stations — little more than platforms and parking lots — and the attendant necessary infrastructure upgrades for just $15 million and run the trains for less than $3 million a year. And once SEPTA, Norfolk Southern, and the surrounding towns agree to the idea, their consultant says they could get it all up in running in under 18 months."

Rumor has it that SEPTA may long-term lease or outright buy all MARC equipment leased during SEPTAgheddon of 2017.

*2016

Read that rumor back when it was an ongoing situation, but then subsequently all the equipment went back to MARC. Is this new information?

It is indeed, from an inside source.

It would make sense as a stop-gap which would allow them to increase the number of trains after the Sprinter deliveries are complete but before the ML cars arrive.

Edit: I believe some of these cars made their way to the LIRR for the summer on a short term lease to ease congestion on shore-bound trains.
