In the wake of continuous record-breaking enrollment, Duquesne University has begun construction of a 12-story residence hall. Approximately 400 beds will be available for upperclassmen in suite-style configurations.

“A Duquesne education is in demand more than it has ever been and, as a result, we need more on-campus housing options for our students,” said Dr. Charles Dougherty, president. The new building will be located on the former site of Des Places Hall, which housed various academic and non-academic units.

The University will work with the City of Pittsburgh Planning Commission this spring in moving the project forward. In alignment with Duquesne’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the building will be constructed to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Duquesne’s new residence hall moves closer to completion

Pittsburgh Business Times by Louis A. Corsaro, Assistant Managing Editor

As Duquesne University enters the final couple of years for its current 10-year master plan, one of its biggest projects is nearing completion.

The new Des Places residence hall, a 31,000-square-foot facility with about 430 beds and a $35 million pricetag, is scheduled for completion this summer. The university expects to move students into the building in mid-August, said Stephen Schillo, vice president, management and business.

The 12-story building is expected to be certified at least LEED Silver. Schillo said LEED Gold is a possibility.

They likely want it to fit in with its campus neighbors and the Mercy property across the street.

Not horrible for a dorm building.

Nice view from the meeting room. You can look down at one of Pittsburgh's starchitect buildings, the Mies Van Der Rohe lab.
That 60's looking dorm on the left is horrid. It's uglier than the Allegheny county jail.

Duquesne residence hall earns Gold LEED certification

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Duquesne University’s Des Places Hall, which opened in the fall of 2012, has been awarded Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

In doing so, it becomes the first Duquesne University building to earn such status.

WTW Architects designed the $38 million, all-suite dorm, which houses about 400 juniors, seniors and graduate students, and uses nearly 22 percent less energy than a standard dormitory.

“We’re committed at the university to have any new construction to be LEED certified,” says Rod Dobish, Duquesne’s executive director of facilities management.

Among its energy-saving mechanisms, Des Places (pronounced "déh plah") Hall utilizes carpet, ceiling tiles and ceramic tiles made from recycled materials. A five-kilowatt, roof-top solar panel accounts for about 1 percent of the building’s energy. Additionally, the dorm's elevators are equipped with regenerative drives that generate electricity as they brake.

Des Places is also designed to save large amounts of water, and to that end, includes drought-tolerant landscaping and water refilling stations with water fountains on every floor.

“Students, instead of using bottled water, can fill up containers on each floor. At some point, we’d like to start a competition to see who can have the most energy,” Dobish says. “We’re not just delighted, but the students who live there have given it glowing reviews.”
