i couldn't care less about the casino personally. i just think this building looks really nice and hope it gets built. it isn't that typical "Vancouver style" which makes it unique and interesting.

I just think it's cheesy to say that this was inspired by mountains. Mountains are visually appealing, to me this most certainly is not. Least favourite design for Vancouver in my opinion. Just because it's different by contrast doesn't mean it is good...

Based on the plans (see earlier in this thread) the interior public atrium space looks pretty amazing.

The site has been cleared and it looks like excavation will start very soon, if it hasn't already.

Am in town for work, noticed an excavator rolling in this morning. Seems like the digging has already begun.

But that's the _in_ think in Vancouver design these days. Tick boxes that say [ ] Inspired by mountains? [ ] Inspired by water? [ ] LEED sustainability? [ ] Integrated bike lanes/chicken coops? [ ]

Tick those off and bango project ready to go.

I sarcastically kid but it does seem like a lot of project say "inspired by the mountains" like anyone honestly (a) notices or (b) gives a flying crap.

Either way it looks like a nice project. I an suspect as to it looking like the renders IRL and some of the concerns noted about street-level and integration with the Concord development I'd mirror but this isn't in my back yard so I'd be happy to see it happen regardless as I think the open lots around both stadiums need development ASAP to complete the look you're starting to get on the other side of False Creek.

Is the concrete walkway around BC Place going to stay as is? Or are they going to shave it back some?

Yeah, marketing.

That design could just as well be "inspired by the technological age and information flow".

Yes they are removing it. Walked by yesterday and they are busy jack hammering and removing the concrete walkway up to where the pedestrian bridge is. Also busy excavating elsewhere on site. Seems to be moving pretty fast

Nope - demolition and excavation.
They don't have final DP approval yet.

BC Place casino developer gets extra cash to pay for parkade
Timing of ‘facility development commission’ moved up because of complexity and cost of city-required underground parking
By rob shaw, Vancouver Sun
December 19, 2014

...

The resort project, spearheaded by Paragon Gaming, has special permission from the B.C. Lottery Corporation to temporarily take an extra commission off gambling revenues at its existing Edgewater casino to help pay for the new underground parkade.

Casino companies ordinarily get the funding, a “facility development commission,” when a capital project is completed, but the timing was moved up in this case because of the complexity and cost of the parkade

...

The Paragon deal was a “unique situation,” said Lightbody, because the project was required by the City of Vancouver to build expensive underground parking in a confined space near BC Place.

Critics have questioned whether Paragon and its partners on the project needed the money because of financial difficulty in some gambling facilities in other provinces.

But Lightbody said the company doesn’t actually get the money until the parking structure is complete.

“We will hold that money until they have significantly and substantially completed that, and met our requirements for completion,” he said.

The Site 10A project is slated to cost $535 million. The companies involved announced Wednesday they had secured $415 million in project financing for the resort, in addition to existing equity in the project.
