I have doubts about the ability of these types of organizations to handle the city's parks... Assiniboine Park being the main park in the city can attract the heavy hitter donors. But if you had 10 more conservancies trying to duke it out to raise funds to support more obscure parks in the city, how far would they really get?

The stats compare this year to last, New Year's Day to April 15:

Homicides, 9 this year, 6 last.

Shootings, up 82 percent. A whopping 31 this year, 17 last.

Commercial robberies, up 53 percent to 150 this year, 98 last.

Muggings, 336 this year, 261 last, an increase of 29 percent.

Commercial break-ins, 355 compared to 245 in '16. (A 45% increase.)

Residential break-ins, only up 8 percent. 500 compared to 465.

Motor vehicle theft, you know, the "success" story that's regularly trotted out by police and pundits alike, up 34 percent year over year. 484 this year, 362 last.

And the good news? Reported sexual assaults down from 36 to 28. And attempted car theft down 15%.

I'm guessing you used April to try to make the numbers look worse, since by now, they have come to be very comparable to last year. There has been 1 more murder so far this year than there was to this point last year - an insignificant change statistically. Overall crime reported on crime stat is up 12% from last year - but not all crimes are reported on crime stat, and the general trend has been a decrease in crime over the decades.

I've learned to translate over the past dozen or so years. Let me give it a shot:

"The proposed Inuit Art Centre has many people from abroad watching our city at the moment. Combine that with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the work that Mandel Hitzer at Deer and Almond is doing (like Raw Almond), and the work that Architecture firm 5468796 is doing, it's all starting to add up to something big. Winnipeg it punching above its weight. However, I wish that the current provincial government would wake up, stop running around with their heads up their up their asses, and begin governing."

How did I do 1ajs?

Of note, there were 8,998 auto thefts in Winnipeg in 2004.

Incredible. It was clearly out of control for a while. Back in those days, these were a ubiquitous sight:

So apparently the Inuit Art Centre is in jeopardy of not happening if the province doesn't give them the $15m the NDPs promised. This begs the question, why did they tear down the WAG Studio without even knowing if they'd be able to build the new building or not.

Because Winnipeg surface parking lots are like Hydra. Build on one, two more appear.

Anyone know if this is technically in the "downtown" boundary or not? ie: would they even be allowed to turn it to parking if this falls through?

Can't remember if it ends at Memorial or Sherbrook.

I was a little surprised to see WAG going ahead with the demolition in the first place given that the prospects of non-essential capital projects that depend on provincial spending are dim these days.

I guess WAG will have to put the programming that formerly occupied their studio space somewhere else now. You have to wonder about the wisdom of rushing in the way they did if funding wasn't lined up yet. Personally I'd hate to see the project hit the backburner over $15 million... there must be some way out of this.

It is within the downtown zoning bylaw boundaries.

So it wouldn't be allowed [...unless they pull a FUFG move]. Funny how the Bay parkade is conveniently cut out of the "character sector" even though The Bay is so prominent and obviously a main feature of that whole area.

The whole Bay block is part of multi-use. I agree it is full of character. Be a shame if the Bay went under.

Does "character sector" have any weight to it? Like does that mean anything in a bylaw/maintenance capacity? Because for a character area, which should be a top area to visit, it's pretty lackluster around Memorial Park. Also just found out MP is a provincial park, meaning we're unlikely to see any improvements soon beyond the upgraded LED lights.

^ It's a potentially $30 million hit given that some private backers may back out if the province doesn't kick in cash. Which is a lot considering the entire project cost is $65 million. So we'll basically be going from an architectural showpiece to something that looks like a Bed Bath & Beyond. Better not to do it at all if they can't do it properly...

the province should give them atleast 5 - 10 million

i dont get it man

thats not much of a hit not like they asking for 100 mill i think they will get way more in return from tourism

i think theyll get the money

theres way to much pressure from private donators and federal govt for the stupid pos govt not to give 15 million

article says the federal funds will disappear if not spent. so they used part of those funds for the demolition already.
