Smile NEW YORK | InterContinental Times Square Hotel | 307 FT / 94 M | 34 FLOORS | T/O

Taken from the InterContinental Hotel's website:

Quote:

The InterContinental New York Times Square will be located at 44th Street and 8th Avenue, in the heart of the Broadway District and within walking distance to 40 theaters. The New York fashion, financial and commercial districts are nearby as well as spectacular sights, city landmarks and incredible shopping. The hotel is conveniently located near all of New York City’s airports and within blocks of Penn Station and Grand Central stations. A Subway station is accessible below the hotel.

Designed by the global architecture firm Gensler, The InterContinental New York Times Square rises 34 stories above the dynamic Eighth Avenue development corridor. It joins contemporary icons the Hearst Tower by Norman Foster and Renzo Piano’s New York Times Building on the skyline. Gensler’s holistic design draws from two distinctly New York neighborhoods. White glass along Eighth Avenue reflects the movement and shimmer of the street, while warm-toned granite on the 44th Street façade relates to the adjacent residential buildings. Featuring a restaurant and street-level retail, the six-story podium is topped by a sculptural glass hotel tower.

The hotel is expected to open in Summer 2010.

They started demolision of the old structures about a year ago. I've walked by many times... I just didn't know what was going up. I'm kinda lame.

Finally a render. I've only been waiting for a render to show up for this site.

shame, with it goes the colorfulness that that stretch of 8th had.

Tishman realty is building a hotel on this site. 30 something stories. No render has been made available

I remember when they demolished the site, but it's been under the radar for good reason...

It's the site that was demolished last year.

Zoning wouldn't even allow it to rise to what they are building it to now, which is 34 floors. They had to buy, transfer, and get special approvals for air rights from various theatres in the area to even get it to 34 stories.

Um... poor word choice for a New York building. But I agree with the sentiment.

It's nowhere near as bad as Beaver House. At least the zebra building seems to have class.

Are we talking about the black and beige Kaufman trainwreck in the background of that photo? Because if so, then I agree I too wish it would, er, be quickly disassembled and erased from memory.

This building is a nice fill in. Good to see more buildings sprout in on the left side of 8th Ave, I hate to see those little buildings.

No need for that drastic of a measure. Just a top to bottom reclad by getting rid of the stripes and making it all just one color would do just fine.
