by that arguement is North York its own city? not really..
Mississuaga has its own municipal government. If amalgamation in the 1990's had gone further than just Metro Toronto, nobody would be arguing this. Mississauga is a collection of villages that grew to 700,000 people because of the growth pressures emanating from Toronto, and is intricately tied to Toronto, and the rest of the GTA, through commuting patterns, infrastructure, etc. An arbitrary municipal boundary does not make a built form a different city.
Hamilton is more of its own city as it has much more independent commuting patterns and has a history of growth coming from things not related to Toronto. Oakville is no different than Mississauga though, Nor is Vaughan, Markham, Brampton, Pickering, etc.
As for "getting our heads out of our asses", I've only been living in the 416 for 2 years. Before that, I was a 905er too, albeit not Mississauga. I still work in the 905, and am very far from the type of person who "never goes north of Bloor Street"
