Denver - Highlights

Denver highlights photographed in June 2009:

Skyline:

Civic Center:
The Colorado State Capitol sits on a small hill above and adjacent to downtown, and sits across a classicly symmetrical park from the Denver City and County Building, forming a small but effective axial center. The front steps of the capitol feature a riser that designates its elevation as one mile above sea level.

Denver Public Library:
The central library building was designed by Michael Graves and sits next to the Civic Center.

Denver Art Museum:
Also next to the Civic Center, this museum is comprised of a complex of buildings on either side of a street. The 1971 Gio Ponti-designed original building is a complex study in fenestration, while the 2006 Daniel Libeskind-designed addition is a bold angular composition which includes a nearly windowless museum building as well as a parking garage and residential building across a linear plaza.

Downtown:
A few assorted shots.

Colorado Convention Center:
This massive building in downtown features a giant blue bear sculpture that appears to be peering into the lobby, an integrated parking structure, and a tunnel for the light rail system.

16th Street Mall:
This pedestrian and transit mall is 16 blocks long and stretches nearly the entire length of downtown. It is the main shopping street and is lively and landscaped with plentiful street furniture.

Skyline Park:
This downtown series of plazas is several blocks long and crosses the 16th Street Mall. Originally designed by the office of Lawrence Halprin, the park has been renovated recently but several of his signature complex concrete compositions remain.

LoDo:
Lower Downtown is the large area closest to the South Platte River which has been the focus of most recent downtown projects. The area is dominated by renovated historic masonry buildings closest to the main downtown, including the still-active Union Station, and that style has been the inspiration for newer developments such as Coors Field, the professional baseball stadium. As the district gets closer to the river, its many residential buildings get progressively modern in style. Many are situated along the railroad tracks and a modern pedestrian bridge connects them.

South Platte River parks:
An extensive series of connected parks lines the river along the edge of LoDo, including Commons Park and Confluence Park.

Downtown Aquarium:
This facility is on the banks of the river and features an extensive aquarium exhibit complex as well as a restaurant.

Pepsi Center:
This arena is also located near the river, on the egde of downtown.

Invesco Field at Mile High:
The Denver Broncos stadium is located just across the freeway from downtown and the river.

Denver International Airport:
Although it is located miles away from downtown, I have to include this great facility!

Very nice. Great picture taking and quality....although that particular skyline shot doesn't do the city justice.

CONative, I agree, I was shocked when I got home that I only had one skyline shot after all that photography and it was the one I posted, taken from the other side of the river, I think near Elitch. I normally try to get to a good vantage point for an overview but I never seemed to have reached it on this visit!

Great thread! And everything is so green! Unusual for this time of year.
I'm from Denver. I love Denver. I think it's a great city that's really coming into it's own lately. But...
Denver has some of the worst public art I've ever seen anywhere. What is the point? It feels like Denver is trying so hard to be "unique" that they've really stumbled down a weird art path. Thank god the giant chair wasn't in this thread...

Weird is good... Denver is stumbling down such a weird art path that it's becoming like no other weird place on Earth. It's getting so weird, that no other city would even even think of making city art like Denver! So it is unique ;-p

OK. That's a healthy perspective. I'll give you that.
And I guess I have to admit I do like the giant gay couple frolicking about hand in hand outside the performing arts center.
But the dust pan and broom shoulda been left in the closet.

Great photos.

The South Platte is pretty high there. I loved the few summers every so often when it seemed to stay green in the city past June.

I do enjoy some working class unban element and pedestrian character thrown into the mix though too.

Nice thread.

The Gio Ponti building grows on me every time I see it. And, I happen to love that chair with the horse.

Same here, I love the chair with the horse on it in front of the old part of the library!

And yes, awesome thread!

You sure get around there pal, huh? Excellent photos. Some of this reminds me of Portland. Did you note any similarities there?

Denver is like a mirage. From far away it appears to only have 3 buildings with a small DT, but up close, it is very cool, very urban, very diverse, very large CBD. Denver is one great city.

edmontonenthusiast, yes I have been traveling alot the last few years! I think Denver's LoDo and Portland's Pearl District have a similar feeling, and both cities certainly seem very outdoorsy! Portland has a noticeably superior public transit system while Denver has the better urban downtown atmosphere.

Nice photos.

-I've also noticed Portland/Denver similarities. I think if Portland were the exact same size as Denver they would almost be like twins...of course in many respects, not all.
