North Temple bridge demolition begins

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...on-begins.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Shortly after business and community leaders pleaded with the public Tuesday to continue to patronize North Temple businesses, construction crews began demolition of the street's iconic traffic bridge, limiting access to the city's west side for the next roughly 18 months...

Ryan Memmott, right, construction manager of the North Temple Light Rail TRAX expansion project, helps Salt Lake City mayor Ralph Becker use an excavator to demolish a concrete barrier on the North Temple viaduct during a press conference in Salt Lake City Tuesday to announce the beginning of the project. North Temple will be closed for 18 months during the construction. Keith Johnson, Deseret News

I'm starting to see a lot of brownish brick used, like the facade of brick being used on Main Street.

While I like the granite grays and silvers, I think we have enough of it in that immediate area. I was very glad to see the diverse choice of red and brown based shades going up along Main and South Temple. The whole feel is very classic 1920's-30's to me. I've begun to also appreciate the contribution of the rose shade of Eaglegate, now that these other shades are coming into play. The new CCC is definitely a major improvement over the old and trendy color palette, treatments and styles of the 60's-70's. The new palette and designs/treatments will have a classic endurance that won't fade or become outdated in twenty years.

Taste of skybridge-to-be with trax

I hope the final execution of these balconies look better than this one
would suggest.

A penthouse I could easily live in!

New brick pavers being set between JSM and LDS Church
Administrative Bldng. I also noticed that the is now dirt in the
new concrete planter that was a topic a few posts ago. Unfortunately,
it looks like it was prep for planting and that likely means it will
remain a concrete finish. This plus the fact that the finish on it seems
too final to be a base for a covering stone. I hope Im wrong, granite
or another quality stone would look better. Didn't take a picture of it,
though.

Finally, some windows going in on main

Gallivan Center makeover getting under way

An artist's rendering shows plans of the Gallivan Center makeover, including a building on 200 South, an expanded amphitheater and an at-grade ice rink. (Provided by Eda Architects)

Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — The Gallivan Center's $8 million makeover starts now.

Big-D Construction, the contractor selected for the project, will begin construction at the popular downtown plaza immediately, with completion slated for April 2011, city officials announced Monday.

The project will include a two-story structure along 200 South, an expanded amphitheater and an at-grade skating rink. The outdoor rink will be completed in time for the annual Lights On celebration in November, officials said.

A number of events will continue at the Gallivan Center throughout construction, including Wednesday Rocks and Craft Lake City. The Lunch Bunch concerts also will continue during construction.

The Twilight Concert Series is the biggest casualty of the construction process. The popular summer series will leave its longtime home at the Gallivan in favor of another location, which officials will announce Thursday.

There is some framing going up against the ugly brown Qwest building.
Does anybody know what is going there?

I parked in the new garage under Richard's Court. There is a
fenced-off portion of the parking garage that has some odd-looking
metal structures over the parking spaces. They look like they may
be for cars. Does anybody know what the deal with them is?
Do RC residents get two spaces, but one is stacked on the other?
I'd be terrified to use the thing myself. Hopefully they have valets
that park the cars for them.

The Montage ~ Check out the virtual promotion pics of the Metro's newest five-star hotel. This is going to be one very impressive project. Along with the new St. Regis, Sky Lodge, and Waldorf Astoria's Dakota, this really helps to solidify the Park City Ski Area of the metro among the top of the heap.

Mountain States Construction: Montage Deer Valley Resort

By Brad Fullmer - Spring 2010

The estimated $280-million Montage Deer Valley hotel and resort in Empire Canyon at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, should be complete by the end of 2010.

Jeff Mongan, a partner with developer Athens Group of Phoenix, says the structure portion has been completed by general contractor Layton Construction Co. of Sandy, Utah, with construction crews presently working on interior framing, mechanical and electrical rough-ins, and interior finishes in certain areas.

Mongan says that working in tough winter conditions and site conditions are “the biggest challenges we’ve had.”

The project site required extensive preparation. Crews installed 157 foundation piers up to 3 ft in diameter, some drilled down to 95 ft in certain areas.

The Montage Deer Valley is the third Montage project to be developed by Athens Group. The other two are in California—the Montage Laguna Beach and Montage Beverly Hills.

“The Montage Deer Valley is indeed a luxury property similar to the other Montage projects we have developed,” Mongan says. “It will compete at the high end of the marketplace.”

The design is a mountain-style lodge. It includes a generous use of stone, high ceilings and expansive windows with panoramic views of the adjacent Deer Valley ski slopes.

The ski-in, ski-out property will feature 174 guest rooms and suites, as well as 81 private residences. Year-round luxury amenities will include a 35,000-sq-ft spa, three distinct dining venues, an expansive lobby lounge with bar and terrace, and 17,000 sq ft of meeting/event space.

The project will feature three levels of heated underground parking along with retail shops. Guests will have access to 24-hour room service while the spa will offer club-style relaxation areas and locker rooms.

Each guest room will have a gas fireplace, mountain and valley views and stone bathrooms with separate glass-wall showers and soaking tubs.

The private residences are on the upper six floors of the resort.
