Lol, don't apologize to Vancouver... no way in hell are we getting tall anytime soon and we know it. The Stantec is totally impressive though and I am glad that Edmonton is getting it.

Can't remember seeing a ceremony for a project that reaches grade. Now, that's undeniably Edmonton.

I'm seriously glad for Edmonton but I think cold might need a prescription to calm him down a bit.

Exactly. Who knows if the city will pay up when WAM comes knocking for more money after the office tower topping out ceremony.

Gotta keep the masses excited. It's not every day we get a building like this.

It's okay. He's had a lifetime of height restrictions and now that Edmonton can finally build something 200+ meters tall he can't contain himself.

^ I imagine the reaction will be similar when Calgary gets its first supertall. It's all relative.

At current vacancy rates that won't happen for a loooonnnggggg time. When it does I think Oxford Place will be our only hope.

You are gonna find me rather irritating when One Bloor West (304 m) starts construction and/or One Yonge (320 m) gets final approval from the OMB.

My current expectation is that Brookfield in Calgary and Stantec in Edmonton will be our last really tall commercial towers for a while, unless we can somehow lure more financial services to this province.

Considering the vacancy rates around the country (except Toronto) right now, I'm amazed that those two monsters are getting off the ground... Stantec in particular given that it's just starting and because of its size relative to Edmonton's office market. It'll be interesting to see what the office markets look like in two years time.

That said, there were new office towers conceived in the roaring 80s and opening up across the country in the early 90s well after the recession was under way, so I suppose it isn't unusual.

Can't wait for Calgary to have something over 250m, maybe one day, one day.

Stantec is helped that it is significantly leased already, and the residential portion will be rental units in a market where rental vacancies are still relatively low and rates relatively high.

What was said about these two being the last tall towers built in the province for a long while is probably accurate.

Both got off the ground when things were good. Both have lease agreements for the majority of their office space. The question mark lies with Stantec's residential and whether it gets completed as proposed if things remain stagnant in Alberta a year from now. with Brookfield, it's a question of whether it will be occupied or the front doors chained shut.

Taller buildings are simply not allowed in Vancouver so no worries.

Cenovus might not need the space, but didn't Scotia just lease a chunk of the building?
