Talking Thankyou!!

Love every single picture on this. It's interesting how Old John is actually more wide known, or at least, more famous or talked about within chicagoans than Sears. It must be the location, because its Magnificent, this building is so plain, yet so interesting. It defines the north part of the skyline IMO. This building will always be loved by Chicagoans and people who visit Chicago, I love it, and it also has the best observation deck the city has or ever will. I wonder when a major renovation could happen? Anyway, thankyou for the VERY NEEDED thread, so we can discuss Old John, and learn something, because till today, im still learing about one of my favorite buildings in the chi.

Back when I really started to get into skyscrapers back in middle school, I actually thought it was the Sears Tower. I remember watching shows like Family Matters and Married with Children and always making sure to catch the opening of the show so that I could see the skyline. It wasn't until one day in middle school in Social Studies that I found a picture of the Sears Tower in my textbook, and realized I was wrong. I think that was really the first time I was really aware and interested in skyscrapers elsewhere. I had been interested in them in Austin, but since the internet wasn't around, and I wasn't exactly reading skyscraper and architecture books at the time, I had to rely on obscure photos of cities in books and magazines. I feel like Big John is one of those skyscrapers that really got me interested in the subject. I'd say it's probably the most iconic Chicago skyscraper around. It's like a mesh between the USX Tower in Pittsburgh, and the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco. It's just a great skyscraper.

Dark, ominous, and quite possibly the world's perfect skyscraper...

This day in age with the tech we have now, using the current shape of the original structure and engineering, I am sure it is technically feasible without a doubt.

Thanks for the pics.

I see what you are seeing in the before and after pics. It looks like the father tree and its young saplings yearning for the sun in the guidance [all looking in with admiration] and protection from their paternal protector.

One of the best skyscrapers of all times. One of the first skyscrapers to make me love architecture.

I'll take some pictures when I get the penthouse. =P

I've always wondered about the discussions that went into designing it with the double antennae. And of course they were red and white striped for years and years.

I like the double antennas. They make the building look cool and complete. Both white and red+white antennas look good too. They should change it every dozen or so years. Imo.

This building is a perfection of its school of architecture. You cannot get anything more perfectly modern and powerful (and expressive of its structure) than this building. Every single part of the design serves a purpose, yet retains an artistic, forceful, flare. This is easily my favorite building on the planet...

It was even beautiful under construction. At that time, it must have been hyper-dominant in the skyline.
