Nice stuff in the last few posts. The Copenhagen/St.Js comparisons were interesting, and a wonderful tour by mcminsen of the lesser seen side of Terminal City.

A city where very second street built after 1916 is named after a place in Europe/Africa where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought.

Just enough room for 2.5 kids.

This cracks me up. Goodbye "Velma's Traditional Newfoundland Food", hello "Eat Clean".

Why is it "Nova Scotia" but "Terra Nova"? Shouldn't be we "Nova Terra"?

And a couple from Ian Winter via FB of today's protest for Canada to give us more refugees.

Holloway Street, nicknamed "Heart Attack Hill".

Nice Charlottetown picture Signal. This photo must have been taken from the roof of the Delta Hotel.

Here's another picture of lower Queen Street I took earlier this year. This block is just out of your frame to the right and is a recently renovated historical block. The large red brick building is well over 100 years old and was formerly a large bulk wholesaler. As the sign on the crest of the building states, it is now the home of Electronic Arts Charlottetown production studio. Apparently they bought out a local Charlottetown software development firm a few years back, kept their team intact and moved them into this new building last year. EA employs something like 100 people in the Island capital.

There's some new streetview data up for Halifax. I thought this scene of Barrington was interesting because of the changes evident along the street. It's not really clear where the street will wind up in 5 or 10 years (will it get lots of chain stores? lots more shoppers? or remain more or less like it is now). It is hard to tell from the picture but the brick facade on the left that is held up by metal bars is being restored; it has been in that state since about 1994. Many other heritage buildings on the street are getting restored and in the process additions are going in on top, so in a few years this will have a lot more 6-8 storey buildings. The crane is for a big residential highrise that will probably more than double the number of people living along the main commercial stretch of the street.

Here's a view looking the other way. There's a strange mix of businesses right now. A couple of chains have moved in but a lot of the old businesses are still around so there's Urban Outfitters next to the used bike shop, etc.

Barrington is interesting but a bit of a mess. The nicest heritage buildings are down a couple of blocks.

This one's 200 years old:

Charlottetown is really nice, and that Halifax street as well -- it's the one with that Green Lantern building, right? I think I recognize the Street View (and I believe I can see the building on the right hand side in the first pic).

One nice thing in Vancouver is that there are a lot of companies that build really great looking newer houses. Even if you go out to far-flung suburbs (I am thinking about the nicer parts of Coquitlam, for example) these days you will find new neighbourhoods with convincingly designed craftsman-inspired houses in nice rows built up to the sidewalk. Even the McMansion type houses can be surprisingly tasteful in parts of the city.

People complain a lot about tear downs on the west side of town but often the new houses are nicer than the old ones that were replaced. A lot of Vancouver's older housing stock, even going back to the pre-war period, is not very attractive. This was basically a pioneer town even in 1900.

Of course, I suspect the crazy prices are behind this phenomenon. Vancouver has little suburban houses that are built and sold for $600k+. There's lots of room in the budget for nicer materials and design.

Yep. I posted a while back about the developer that was threatening to tear it down. He ended up selling it to somebody who then proposed this.

P.S. I remember we discussed it, and I was stunned when you told me the kinda price it would be going for. I was expecting the Maritimes (even Halifax) to be cheaper than that.

(Good news for Halifax, though.)

Wow, pretty nice (I know it has to make financial sense too). I like the setback for the newer story...

Nice set... that Nexus Building looks like something out of LA, it's weird to see a building that flashy on the prairies.

That "Sturdy Stone Center" kinda looks like Dallas City Hall upside down.

I love this style of what I would personally call "spaceship" brutalist. The kind of building that would be at home on a random planet of the Star Wars universe. Not sure if there's an actual sub-category of brutalist for the "Star Wars Style" architectural trend, or not... but I know it when I see it

In the first pic, that building to the extreme left of the picture, is that Saskatoon's tallest?
