Bluefield, WV - Decline in Appalachia

I've been fascinated by West Virginia cities for some time now. I made a tour of the state back in the Fall of 2003. I decided it was time for another visit to Bluefield ( nine years later). Though the city has lost population since my first visit, it does seem to be trying to clean up some of the derelict structures. That said, there is still some sad sights there. I still love the place. It has a population of just over 10,000, about half of what it was in 1950. The micropolitan population is ~ 107,000. It's located near the Virginia border in Mercer County, but is not the county seat (that belongs to Princeton, a city just down the road and one I wish I has taken the time to visit). Here's a link for more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluefield,_West_Virginia

Now to some pics (all downtown or within a couple of blocks).

Good tour. It has a suprisingly tall central cluster which is kinda weird. Nice setting. Looks the economy is shit though.

Judging by the skyline and general quality of building stock, I'm going to assume that Bluefield was once a vibrant little city.

I'm also going to assume that there's a massive suburban shopping complex just outside of town that has sucked the life (almost) completely out of downtown. A shame...

Nice tour Ex-Ith. I pass by there on drives between PA and NC and never really knew there was something like you've shown lurking beyond the ridges on I-77.

Nice pics, Ex-Ith! Surprising to see such tall buildings in an area that's so sparsely populated. The 'Members Only' club must have some tales to tell

Looks like there's a shopping mall in nearby Princeton.

What a great tour, I really like the first one of that 6 story building and how it seems to go right into the hillside in the rear. Does Amtrak stop in Bluefield? Norfolk and Southern looks to have a large presents there...

Wowee zowee! Great tour of a virtually unknown locale. My favorite is that retro building with the multi-colored panels. Incredible!

Such a large stock of old grand buildings for such a small mountain city, very impressive and much nicer than I would have expected.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

@ pEte - it was quite the busy little burg back in the first half of the 20th Century. (Check out the attached video for sprawl, or lack thereof)

@ MayDay - I was too afeared to try that entrance.

@ CastleScott - That is a nice building, and the visitors center is in there. The Norfolk and Southern (Norfolk and Western at the time) helped the economic boom which grew the city. The Amtrak station closed a while back.

For anyone interested here's a video I found with a 2 minute drive through the city. Shows only a couple of fast food joints, but not really sprawlly:

Nice pictures. Bluefield definitely has a nice Downtown/skyline for such a small city.

From the area. Bluefield thrives on coal. Due to coal's decline the city started losing population. Many of the businesses relocated to Bluefield, Va. There is a new push for Bluefield State College to create student housing downtown. That would be a good first step. The city was also trying to get an intermodal rail yard. I'm not sure if those plans fell through. Overall good city with good people. Like many other cities, it needs to reinvent itself.

Also, great video! Sad to see some of it though. Bluefield Avenue used to be full of businesses. Most moved to 460 for easier access and greater visibility. Also, both Bluefield downtowns were hurt by Wal-Mart.

Nice tour -- thanks for views of a place I've only briefly passed through.

Great photothread!! I've been through several towns in West Virginia, but never once have I seen Bluefield. Great building stock. Even for a smaller town. Quite a bit of grit, but that's to be expected in and around the state!!
