There is one act coming to Ottawa that I would rather not comment on it. Guess who I'm talking about? Hint: It is somewhere after Madonna.

Note: Apparently some acts for the Capital Hoedown, though not on this list, but listed on Pollstar have not listed the Capital Hoedown on there concert list. It's even sure it will be held because of the recent financial fiasco by the organizers.

Pat must be pushing 65.. as for Loverboy, I sat near them on a flight from ottawa to Winnipeg last year (flying like your normal everyday slob. One person other than myself recognized them, and I think they were upset because they were hoping to get drunk on the plane.

The Walkmen are playing Montreal on the 15th and Toronto on the 16th.

As usual, the tour skips Ottawa. No local promoter or venue shows any interest in acts like these.

But Taylor Swift at Your Name Here Stadium, HOT DAMN.

A wise and very successful person once told me how to get and stay ahead in life: wherever you encounter a vacuum, plug it!

There are always problem finders and solution finders in life; I try to stick to the latter category.

It seems to me that there is a vacuum in the music scene here, at least according to your tastes. Why wait for someone else to plug it? If you promoted such events yourself you could achieve at least some personal fulfillment, and maybe some financial success, too.

If I had even 1/10th of a clue of how to be a concert promoter, I'd be there. Two huge university campuses in town, and yet virtually no "college" radio acts ever come here. There's a market to be filled, but sadly, not by me.

Nor by anyone else, it seems.

Perhaps you dont know this but there is a huge house music scene in Ottawa and we have some great promoters - DNA Presents (the guys that put on Escapade), bringing in the biggest acts.

I've been involved in the local underground music scene for the last decade and the Metal scene has considerably grown within the last ten years. We're still not getting all of the big acts, but we're starting to see quite a lot of bands that used to skip us all the time before.

The biggest problem is the lack of concert venues of different sizes (not referring to bars / pubs who host bands). The other problem is that I think our promoters like to stick to their comfort zones and rarely take any chances. It also doesn't help when the industry most likely consider us to be a secondary or tertiary market.

The other scene that I'm involved with is the local Gothic / Industrial scene. That scene seemed dead up until about 5 years ago where there's been weekly and monthly nights popping up here and there other than Zaphod's Industrial Strength Tuesdays since. We also have Encephalon who were signed to one of the bigger record labels for this scene in Europe, Dependent Records, a few years ago. Some of their label-mates include Front Line Assembly (members of Delerium) and KMFDM. They're trying to get onto this year's Bluesfest.

If anyone's interested in Synthpop or Industrial music, I host a bi-weekly radio show on Carleton's CKCU called Future Pop.

Surprised that no one has updated this thread since they announced the Bluesfest lineup a week ago, here are some highlights announced thus far:

Also, on another note, how do you all feel about Bluesfest going smoke-free this year? I think it is destined to only have negative consequences, and will result in lower attendance as people will choose to go to other festivals like Osheaga in Montreal (which I have attended many years in a row and which is way better value for $ than Bluesfest). Enforcing the non-smoking rule will be a nightmare for everyone. It will be easier to enforce at the smaller stages, but having security roaming through the big crowds and enforcing the rule during the evening shows will be a disturbance to everyone, way more than the odd whiff of cigarette smoke ever was. It remains a big mystery how they will enforce it. Ottawa by-law can't as this will be on NCC property. NCC can't enforce it as smoking on their property does not break any laws. So it will be up to Bluesfest security to enforce I guess. That means bigger overhead, less attendance and less profit (if any). Just a bad business decision all around. Plus, why does it say on the Bluesfest FAQ site that you are allowed to bring in cigs and lighters if smoking will be banned? Here is the news article re: Bluesfest going smoke free:

What a blast from the past! Just 13 years ago, the same was said for restaurants! Everyone will go to Hull or Embrun or Rockland! It will be costly and impossible to enforce!

And presumably you are allowed to bring cigarettes and a lighter so you can smoke before and after the show, and even during, if you take a break and leave the grounds.

Its apples and oranges. We are talking about Ottawa's biggest annual outdoor music festival here with thousands of attendees. Not smoking at bars and restaurants didn't really meet much resistance, the smoking crowd was mostly for it. In this case, even the non-smoking crowd is against the new rule, look at the poll on the CBC article, majority are against this new rule.

As for bars, have you been out lately? I have, and I always smell cigarette smoke at one point or another, because people just don't know where to smoke anymore, or don't care, or take chances and they get away with it. Yet a bar crowd is easier to enforce than a festival crowd after dark. So logic would have it that this new rule will be a big fail at Bluesfest.
