Just a reminder - sopas ej posted a huge "now" picture of the Forever 21 building in the background in post #4465. From that post, here's a much earlier picture.

When sopas_ej first posted his personal photographs they weren't that HUGE. (they're a bit hard to see now).

I've noticed in some of my earliest posts, several of my personal photographs mutated into GIANT billboard size! I had to go back and reduce them in size.
I believe it happened when they did some work on the forum.

Has anyone else noticed this?

You both use ImageShack to host your images. I did a quick Google, and found a few posts by ImageShack users who were complaining about images being resized. I think this is more likely to explain the size changes.

According to the 1886-1887 CD, this was the residence of "N Jacoby" of Jacoby Brothers, who appear to have had a number of clothing and shoe stores. N Jacoby is listed at "318 S Fort"--which of course became Broadway.
That's a great shot of a very pretty house (with the perfect fence).

Unless street renumbering, or some such, has defeated me the site is now occupied by the handsome bones of the 1906-1907 Blackstone Building (formerly the Blackstone Dry-Goods Store), two doors down from the Bradbury. Once five stories tall (floors 4 and 5 were demolished in 1971), it was a movie theater for almost 50 years:

The 7/17/06 permit lists R B Young as architect, with P M Johnson as the builder for owner A P Johnson of Riverside. Architect A C Martin did many of the 1920s changes, but not the 1926 theater conversion.

The 1906 permit:

Taller days for the Blackstone in ca 1944, sporting all 5 of its original stories. (The Rindge and the Bradbury make a handsome pair on either side of W 3rd Street):

The Blackstone housed the 350-seat Cozy Theater. Here it is in a screengrab from 1950's "The Killer Who Stalked New York"
That's Evelyn Keyes up on the Bradbury threatening to jump:

The Cozy opened circa 1926-1927. Here it is in 1955. The cornice has been missing since 1950 (note the LA County Library signage):

The Cozy Theater was renamed "Astro" in the 60s and closed in 1977. Architect Chas A Ham designed the change that year from the then-403-seat theater into a restaurant space (per permits):

Man, I didn't know that happened. Looking back on some of my earliest posts, I see that the pictures have disappeared. If I had the time to fix them, I would. I don't even use ImageShack anymore; I haven't been on that website in quite a long time now.

Thanks for posting this MichaelRyerson.

I wasn't sure about the name of the 'new' hotel....and now I know.

It had slipped my mind that the Arcade Station was in the immediate vicinity. (I have difficulties remembering details. . It's embarrassing at times)

I recently came across the following screen-grabs in a box of old CDs.

What's that little hut?

It turns out, the short 2:45 minute video was first posted by sopas_ej way back in 2012. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JO5izL_3Jo

The one and only follow up post was GW's (below).

So what is the building with the large Wax Seal Co. sign on it's roof?

And then there's this screen-grab from the same video (at 1.56)

Some commenters on YouTube think it's a Tucker, (below)

...while others think it's a 1949 Cadillac Fastback.

ER, taking things in sequence, the little hut is a shelter for Pacific Electric San Fernando Valley Line streetcar patrons. This was the Barham Boulevard stop. Based on the newest cars seen in the video, the year was 1955 and the PE has been gone from the center of the Hollywood freeway for close to three years.

Next, I have to side with the Cadillac crowd on the grey car.

Lastly, as to your tunnel post, I agree with Ed Workman that we are looking at SP's tunnel under today's Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth.

Cheers,
Jack

I can't be sure of its being the Cadillac, but I'm sure it's not the Tucker. The Tucker's roofline terminates into the horizontal surface of the rear deck, whereas the roof of the car in the video does not.

One other comment on the linked video: I was surprised to see that the offramp to Barham was closed so long ago, relatively soon after the freeway's opening.

Los Angeles Policemen dressed as ladies. This supposedly enabled them to trap purse snatchers in action. Aren't they lovely.
A better word might be creepy.

1950s LA Vice Squad.

Is there a third option? There's other fastbacks. A 1950 Chevy Fleetline isn't quite right, but, if it's a Cadillac, where are the taillights?

I can't tell if the rear window is triple-paned (like the Cadillac) or if that's just reflections (?) The Caddy does have the very pronounced dovetail at the back we're looking for.

That didn't help much, but it's definitely not a Tucker.

60 years or more ago, I could name the make, model and year of every car on the road. I've forgotten everything now, except I did amaze someone the other week by pointing out a Henry J.

The screengrab above is from a fraction of a second earlier, and I think there could be small fins. The ends of the rear bumper certainly look like they merge into fins like on the 1949 Cadillac Coupe below. I realize that the three-piece rear window isn't unique to Cadillacs of this era, but it's another detail that matches.

This is Figueroa looking north below Sunset (view is from Boston Street). Here's another shot from essentially the same vantage point...

Aside from all the beautiful Detroit iron, notice the contra-flow lanes. Very forward thinking. Or perhaps we're not as modern as we like to think.

I had to go back to 2012 to get the Googlemobile in the right-hand lane for this "now" image of N Figueroa from Boston. I think that the lamp post on the right is one of the only details that remains from the photo above.
