My take is that Metrotown has a better skyline now, but in the future Brentwood will have better, more clustered, skyline.
I would bet on Metrotown considering that it has 24 high-rise towers either currently under contruction or in the planning phase while Brentwood only has 13, according to the city of Burnaby planning department.

Metro hands down, a 20 year head start & more office towers make it look more important but a modern skyline always looks alright. A good vantage shot of Brentwood skyline can be found up the hill on Greenwood/Winston st. Its rarely seen & appears like a tight cluster of buildings...

I found a really interesting tower proposal while trawling the website of a rather obscure architect. It's at Beresford and Silver Ave., the block between MetroPlace and Silver. Has anyone heard further details about the project?

All pictures are from http://www.jka.cc/mixed-used/the-leaf

In the latest major development projects listing from the city of Burnaby it is described as "High-rise residential development with a townhouse/commercial podium", and the status is listed as "on hold".

I don't really see that one happening soon. First time seeing the rendering but the proposed tower has been on the Burnaby projects list for a few years now and is definitely on hold. The site as-is is pretty small & inefficient - only about 22,000 sf after you take into consideration a 10m Beresford St widening.

Thanks for the link - a lot of interesting projects at that website.
The description says the Leaf was inspired by Mississauga's Absolute Towers (Marilyn) and Chicago's Aqua - so it must be a fairly recent design.

Few drive-by shots from Sunday. Too bad I didn't have the correct lens with me.

Looks quite different from this side than what was shown on the last page.

Yeah, you get the three Metrotowers and Metroplace all in a clump.

I find that from Production Way station area, Chancellor looks like the tallest bulding, cause of the perspective.

Once all the Beresford towers are built, as well as the Station Square towers, that gap between the Metrotowers and Sovereign should be pretty much filled in. Not to mention the 7 towers to come later on the Sears site. In 20 years that angle will look drastically different (no big revelation there).

I'm pretty sure metroplace is the one that appears the same height as the metrotowers there. Sovereign is in between them and appears shorter in the third photo.

So is Metroplace not going to be 141 meters? It sure doesn't look like it.

Standing next to Metroplace it does already feel much taller than the Metrotowers, but I don't know how it looks to be almost equal size from this angle. I mean, it's almost topped out and the height difference should be quite significant.

This is somewhat of a rhetorical rant as I am aware of most of the reasons why Vancouver doesnt build taller. It feels like Burnaby is building towers that are more fitting in height and scale to a downtown enviroment then vancouver is. In my opinion.

That said I'm happy to see any pure office proposal on the table.
According to metrovancouver.org (a government website), by 2041 Metrotown is projected to have 12.5 million sq. ft of office space. Currently it's at 2.5 million sq ft. To give a picture of what that would look like, downtown Edmonton is at 11.3 million sq ft.

http://apps.business.ualberta.ca/pho...n/default.html

It seems probable that at some point, Metrotown will be home to the regions tallest office tower. It's a certainty that Metrotown will have the tallest residential tower as well.

The 2041 forecast population for the 0.8 sq miles that is Metrotown (I excluded Central Park from the area total) is 66 820. That's a population density of 83 525/sq mi. The West End, which is also 0.8 sq miles, has a population density of 56 548/sq mi. Hard to say if Metrotown will actually achieve those numbers, but it is definitely trending in that direction.
