You got around, but I'm guessing these were taken early on a Sunday or something, because the sidewalks in the CWE and the Loop are rarely that sparse.

most visitors have no idea that there is an entire city stretching for miles behind the arch (or if they do they don't really have the right idea) - clearly you did some homework summit street. bravo.

The turtle is the perfect analogy for STL -- slow paced, sturdy, long-lived, and resilient.

Amazing photo set! Very comprehensive!

Out of curiosity, were the Central West End photos taken mid-morning, say 10am? I have literally never seen the CWE look like a ghost town to that degree.

People that say they hate St. Louis, don't know St. Louis! St. Louis is a beautiful city and one of the better built cities in America. It's amazing to me that St. Louis hasn't been rediscovered on a national level like a New Orleans, Charleston, and recently Pittsburgh. St. Louis is definitely a city that deserves its day in the sun again.

I was in the CWE more than once, but most of these were between 10am-11am on a Monday.
The weather was rather chilly, so in the cafes the people were inside instead of sitting on the outside seats. A few people walking around too, but I think most others were inside somewhere making more turtle statues.
(During the afternoon/evening times, I saw many more humans out.)

Awesome set. Same with Part 2! I remember as a youngster wondering why there seemed to be turtles all over the place. I seem to remember specifically some turtles in the vicinity of 40 near Forest Park and the Zoo. Might actually be that first one you pictured- or I might be crazy. Stuff I haven't particularly cared to look for since, but am suddenly thinking of now. I always knew I was in the city when I saw the turtles.

Also, the largest actual turtles I've ever seen I saw at Grant's Farm some years ago.
