Feds approve Brightline express train extension between South Florida and Orlando

By Wayne K. Roustan
Sun Sentinel
December 18, 2017

Getting from South Florida to Orlando could be faster now that the federal government has approved the next phase of Brightline’s high-speed passenger rail service that could begin construction early next year.

The Federal Railroad Administration issued a decision Friday that essentially got the Miami-to-Orlando route back on track after Brightline’s parent-company, All Aboard Florida, modified its plans.

“This is the most critical and final step in the extension of Brightline’s service to Orlando, and we are excited to move forward,” Brightline CEO Dave Howard said in a statement. “We look forward to launching service to Miami and starting construction north to Orlando in the first quarter of 2018.”

The trains will reach top speeds of 79 mph between Miami and West Palm Beach, 110 mph to Cocoa, and 125 mph between Cocoa and Orlando.

In coming months, Brightline officials said they will complete designs for the railroad infrastructure to Orlando and for a 70-acre maintenance yard located near a new transportation hub at Orlando International Airport.

On Monday, Brightline officials are scheduled to attend a meeting in Jacksonville with the Florida Development Finance Corporation to discuss the sale of $1.15 billion in tax-exempt bonds to pay for building the link between West Palm Beach and Orlando.

Brightline won approval from the state’s economic development group Oct. 27 to sell $600 million in tax-exempt bonds to private investors to pay for the West Palm Beach to Miami connection.

Wow! Look good! Can't wait to see it!

Hopefully they will extend from Ft. Lauderdale to downtown Miami sometime in 1st quarter or 2nd quarter of 2018.

No, he didn't say anything about fare. Orlando station has already under construction. It won't be done in the year of 2020.

^ Because downtown Orlando isn't really the major destination for travelers. It's just one of many spots around the Orlando area that people might be heading to.

The airport is a stronger transportation hub, a place where AAF can link up with existing transportation services to the various resorts, hotels, convention centers. Eventually SunRail will build an expansion to the airport that can connect travelers to downtown Orlando. This requires some expensive new track, but AAF is keeping quiet on the issue and waiting for Florida taxpayers to fund this project.

Once the SunRail spur into the airport is built, I expect AAF will seek permission to use the spur and run certain trains past the airport and on to downtown Orlando. They'll probably pay some trackage fees in the process, but that's a fraction of what they would have spent to build the downtown extension themselves.

Brightline Passenger Rail Service Is Starting Next Week

Quote:
It’s finally ready to go.

Brightline will launch their first scheduled rail service the week of January 8, the company has announced.

Initially service will run between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Service to Miami will launch sometime in the first quarter of 2018.

The company also succesfully closed on the sale of $600m in Private Activity Bonds to finance the first phase.

The second phase to Orlando will begin construction this quarter, after obtaining final environmental approval late last month. The company has obtained approval to sell an additional $1.15 billion in PAB bonds for the second phase, but is also considering other financing options, including a Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing loan.

TriRail is good and getting better will be expanding to downtown Miami
when the new station opens (shared with Brighline!)
Anybody got photos of Orlando station construction??
Here are renderings and photos of Orlandos intermodal Station at OIA.

The station is now complete and ready to begin train service, as soon as the connections are available.

The station will be at the central spine of the new South terminal to the airport, and it connects to the north terminal via a people mover (already in use).
