As a tour guide, I'm often asked about the amount of sway the building has. Many sources seem to agree that it's about 15 cm, which I guess seems possible distributed across five window seals. But does anyone have reliable data about the sway period? Could it really be as little as 10 seconds?

Concerning the seals, don't forget the deflection will be distributed incrementally across the entire length of the building. It's a design issue but not terrible to factor in.

Concerning the period, 10 sec seems improbably short to me.

Does anyone have an office or visited an office in the Sears? I am going to see someone soon, Radi Rashid, and its interesting how to get to an office on the 80something floor. Its simple, and theres escalators (not just elevators) in the building by the 60 something floor. And for some offices you have to go up, then down, then up a different way. Theres a receptionist to guide me downstairs.
anyway, my question, again, anyone have offices there or visited offices? how did it go? thanks.

Visitors won't have to crane their necks to see straight down from the Sears Tower Skydeck when the building adds four glass-bottomed balconies, nicknamed "The Ledge," to its 50-mile views come June.

The Skydeck on the 103rd floor of the building that is changing its name to Willis Tower, opened in 1974, and has--weather permitting--always provided a view of four states. But to see what's directly beneath them, visitors always had to get as close to the building's windows as possible. The Ledge is scheduled to open next month, according to a spokeswoman for the Skydeck.

WOAH! That's pretty scary. And even though I'm sure that the chances that one of the boxes will fall is less than being eating by a shark that can fly, I'd still be pretty scared. I still wanna visit it though!

Scoped out offices there a decade or so ago, the wastage is impressive (25% ?) I remember it as being significantly more than other buildings we looked at. Wastage (what is the nice term realators use ?) is the % of space you pay for but don't get, your allotment of plumbing/wiring/elevator runs.

The prestige factor is worth it if your business needs that kind of thing.

Willis seeking TIF subsidy for move to Sears Tower

(Crain’s) — Willis Group Holdings Ltd. is seeking a $3.8-million city subsidy to pay for build-out of its new headquarters at Sears Tower, which will soon be renamed Willis Tower after the London-based insurance brokerage.

A tax-increment financing (TIF) redevelopment agreement for the project is on the agenda Tuesday for the city’s Community Development Commission meeting.

A New York-based Willis spokesman said he knew the company had requested a subsidy, but didn’t have details.

Willis and the owners of Sears Tower, 233 S. Wacker Drive, announced in March that the 110-story skyscraper would be renamed Willis Tower after the insurance broker, which is consolidating its local offices there and leasing about 140,000 square feet starting this summer.

Get the hell out of our city if you are going to ask for public money to move into a new office. That is not what TIF funds are for you greedy jerks. If you were asking for the money to build a new building or something that has a nice plaza or maybe historical preservation, maybe, but if you are asking for money to do renovations that will probably just be torn out again by the next person who moves in there, NO. I could care less about the name change, but trying to get $3 million + to build out your new office space is completely scummy...
