We'd be looking at 120-130 on the year when the city usually averages around 300, so something must be wrong with the numbers. But the post back on May 1 was also showing historically low numbers, so maybe things really have slowed down out of nowhere. Either way, it does appear to be a significant decline even if they are off a dozen.
Detroit has the second lowest unemployment rate of any large metro in the country right now at 3.6%. It has billions in development downtown and the economy is looking up, I would think that should help crime rates a bit.

Crime in Detroit always seemed to be more about poverty and desperation than organized gangs, etc like you see in Chicago. Easier to stamp out the first one than to break up the second.

What? The crime situation in Detroit is identical to Chicago. Gangs and drugs.

It's actually hasn't been. Detroit's "gangs" have been far more diffuse, and it's why they are most often described as cliques. What I disagree with is that this has made it easier to manage the crime; in fact, it's quite the opposite.

Either way, the unemployment rate of the metro also doesn't have much to do with crime; there's never been any correlation. Something else is seemingly happening on the ground that's probably too early to pick up at the moment. The drop in homicides is far too big and has happened in far to quick a time frame to ascribe it to the typical factors. Might end up being a blip. Who knows?

Anyway, by the same time period last year Detroit had recorded 139 criminal homcides, so I'm still not sure the 69 number for this year is right.

I don't think crime in Detroit is closely tied to economics. Detroit was by some measures the richest city in the country in the 60's and had soaring, sky-high crime. Now it's one of the poorest and crime is plummeting.

Unemployment rates are by metro, not city. No one thinks the metro area is dangerous. And downtown development has nothing to do with the warzone areas.

seriously.

just look at chicago. ridiculous amount of downtown development right now, but the ghettos keep getting more dangerous as they continue to empty out.
