It's a good thing they didn't waste money on the blimp tower for Hamilton.

The recent Montreal ones all look very good, same goes for the art-deco one posted above. That would have been something.

Some fantastic proposals......great to imagine these built! Makes me wonder... what would change our cities the most had they NOT been built?

You said you weren't sure about some of them, so I added some numbers.

God, no wonder I barely post here anymore.

Hamilton | Copps Coliseum Renovation

Here is a proposal from 2009 for a major renovation to Copps Coliseum which never happened.

The renovated Copps Coliseum would have included:
— Atrium-style lobby with stairs, escalators and elevators to all levels
— New street level retail
— New main concourse
— Club lounge with direct access to the club seating section
— More washrooms
— Food, beverage and bar amenities throughout concourse areas
— New upper concourse to exclusively serve the upper seating bowl
— New upholstered stadium seats
— New “state of the art” video scoreboard
— Capacity for more than 18,000 spectators
— 20 new “bunker suites” located at event level
— New “platinum” restaurant at event level
— 50 mid-level private suites, with bar/buffet facilities, 14- to 16-person capacity
— Four group suites at mid-level with 33- or 42-person capacity
— New suite level restaurant with view of the on-ice action
— New group sales/party deck incorporated into upper seating bowl

I remember this one! They posted blueprints for the top floor, and there was no way in or out, and the bathroom had no door!!

Edmonton Omniplex from the late 60's/early 70s. Football + Hockey. It's probably a good thing it ddn't get built....but it is a rather grand idea.

Basically their plan was to devastate the entire city just like the Americans did to theirs Thank gods none of Canada's "grand" highway schemes ever came to fruition.

I'm serious! There was just this little wall in the kitchen, and if you pop around the corner, there was a toilet there! But it didn't matter because there was no way in or out of the apartment unless you crawled through a window! And there was another unit on that floor with stairs to a lower level entrance, but no bathrooms! Or something like that. We had a lot of fun criticizing that project.

It would have been an amazing place to troll someone with. Give it away on a radio contest.

Maryon has been posted. A couple more never-realized biggies for Toronto were the modernist Eaton's complex from the late-'60s and the Weston Tower from the late-'80s. I'm in the minority that loves the Eaton's towers, but I join the denunciation of the demolition of Old City Hall, which was part of the proposal. Weston, pomo but kind of snazzy in appearance, would have looked ridiculously incongruous and solitary at Yonge/401 twenty years ago. Now, not so much.

Here's a Hamilton proposal that never made it. The proposal was to turn the Century Theatre (built 1913) into condos. The plan was cancelled and the theatre was demolished.
