The garment district (or whatever low rise area behind) is ugly. I wish they would just demolish the whole area and rebuild it, there's nothing amazing about any of the buildings. They are grimy and ugly and do nothing for the city really. Just house the garment workes in Brooklyn or something.

That's like the best urbanity in North America, and as good as any on the planet. I mean, if you don't like that kind of urbanity, then I don't know what to say.

There are almost no garment workers in that area, BTW. They're long-since gone. It's normal office tenants, though the Fashion industry still has an outsized presence. Not sure I would call the area low-rise except in the context of Midtown. The side streets are generally 10-30 floor buildings.

You should visit NY instead of bashing it. The Garment District’s buildings are gorgeous.

If you trolled like this in Chicago threads, you’d be banned.

Really? A lot of them are banal, cheap, lazy garbage.

They're almost all from the early 1900s, and their details are gorgeous. Most need a steam wash and better retail, but I find them to be stunning.

Not sure how this got on the Garment District, but it's the wrong thread.

The story of Hudson Yards is now the story of New York
As a neighborhood takes shape, the city's future seems unlimited

By Greg David
June 4, 2018

Quote:
The headlines about Hudson Yards, the massive West Side development, have all been about the escalating battle between construction unions and The Related Cos. over who builds phase two of the complex.

The bigger story is the way Hudson Yards has—faster than anyone expected—fulfilled the two goals of the government officials who set it in motion: create capacity for the New York economy to expand and revive a moribund waterfront section of Manhattan. Its success can be attributed to more than $600 million in direct public investment and a very lucrative tax break.
Quote:
The first phase of Hudson Yards, built with more than $18 billion in equity and debt over a storage and maintenance yard for Long Island Rail Road trains, will open to the public March 14, Related says. The numbers couldn't be more impressive. The developer has leased or sold 7 million square feet of office space to tenants ranging from luxury accessories specialist Tapestry to ad agency BCG to media giant Time Warner to BlackRock, the largest money manager in the world. Some 55,000 thousand people will work there every day.

A new condo tower is already 50% sold, mostly to New Yorkers. Its retail space is nearly filled. It will boast an Equinox health club and that brand's first hotel, a big public space, a 15-story structure dubbed Vessel, and an arts center, the Shed, with a retractable roof.

This place is going to change the face of NY business geography. Canary Wharf has come to NY, but on steroids (it looks bigger, but i haven't checked the numbers). Who cares, it is similar to other major CBD's that have opened and turned people's perception of a city in an entirely different direction. This case, it's East to West, whereas in London it was West to East (opening up former docks to investment). Good thing the Stadium was not built I suppose. Only thing I don't like is the sterility of the Mall and some of the urban design which is a bit dated and some of the towers could be better, but overall a good development to help modernize the image of NY which, in comparison to some burgeoning Asian metropoli (and NY's future competition perhaps), was starting to seem a bit dated visually before some of the new projects broke ground.

Is that a tunnel I see connecting this building to 30HY? Are there more tunnels like that connecting all these buildings below grade?

Deal with it, I don't like the tower. It's clunky as hell, boxy, boring tower that is probably the worst Foster I've ever seen. Spare me your passive agressive nonsense. In the end I'll think what I like about a tower or building, and nobody's going to tell me I'm wrong about my true emotional reaction to a design.

I find nothing "Clunky" about the design.
My comment was not an insult, but rather my own opinion.
If you cannot accept other opinions that don’t match your own then that’s not an excuse to blame others.

You mad?
