Architect1 -- Putting a carport in the middle of it was a bad idea (*), and it's not a lively street, but it's better than most new buildings. It was designed to be appreciated by the public, not to glorify its architect or say anything about "today". In 30 years, if it was built well, it'll be another beloved old building. But some of the projects on Page 1 will be regarded like people in 2008 regard many buildings from 1978 -- very "yesterday" and not loved. (* An ambulance entry might be an acceptable exception.)

I enjoy solid looking buildings. A few of my other favorite architectural elements include brick and arches. It is attention to detail that I like most.

Here are a few more new buildings.

I'm a fan of the new Sunset Community Centre in Vancouver designed by Bing Thom:

Keep in mind that the MSAs are not exactly identical. The US Census only has a 25% forward commuting rule (25% of a counties population has to work in the urban area) compared to 50% for the Canadian Census. So, it's reasonable to assume that the US Census will produce larger populations all things being equal.

Grand Rapids' MSA is estimated to be 774,084. The CMSA is ~1.3 million, but obviously the CMSA is a much broader definition for a metropolitan area than CMA. It's probably reasonable to assume that Grand Rapids would ahead of Quebec City, but it's hard to really determine without crunching all the numbers. Feel free!

I would be surpised if that building was done. Isn't it across from Camden Yards? When I stayed at the Hampton Inn in October I don't believe it was of the ground yet.

Viking Dude:

Grand Rapids may have the larger metro population, but Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg have much more dense downtowns and started out building highrises much more early than GR. GR has only been going major-league vertical since as recently as the 1980s.

It's ironic how a Canadien urban dude would vibe on GR's JW Marriott tower when THIS GR-USA dude looks at Canada's Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and Toronto as highrise inspiration for GR (along with Chicago, Miami, Hong Kong, Boston, Minneapolis, Shanghai, Houston and Seattle, of course).

I made that same mistake in thinking it was the Chicago Spire.

Actually, it is 3,000 ft; it's called: The Buenos Aires Forum.

It does look like a design taken from the old Fordham Spire version. Except, it's a little on the obese side.

I went to Morgan State out there - LOVED IT! Architecturally speaking, that new Baltimore tower
looks very much related to the JW Marriott Grand Rapids
