2nd Street through there was, at one time, called Silver St.. I've wondered if that was part of it. Anyway, just Emerald is left now and two bits of Diamond.

I'm curious, was there really a Vic Tanny's location on Hollywood Boulevard, or was it just added for the film? (I don't recall seeing it before)
According to IMDb, Rules Don't Apply is set in 1958, but I could only find Vic Tannys [sic] Gym on Hollywood Boulevard in the 1961 CD. The 1956 and 1960 CDs both list Bert Goodrich's Health Center at 6624 Hollyward Boulevard. Here are the other Vic Tanny's locations I found in the early-60s:

6132 Pacific Boulevard
9356 Santa Monica Boulevard (listed as "Vic Tanny's Western Home")
743 N San Vicente Boulevard
1357 Vine Street
416 W 7th Street
5364 Wilshire Boulevard

The 1961/1962 Van Nuys CD also lists a Vic Tanny's gym at 14431 Victory Boulevard.

Martin, the caption for the above image in the LA Weekly article you originally linked to says, "Restored archival footage of Hollywood Boulevard — Oppewall says the production used a car that matched the vehicle seen in the archival footage."

I wonder if there was an enclave of prominent jewelers living in this neighborhood with the streets named after gems?

I picked up this 1966 guide map in an antique store in South Pasadena, while I was in SoCal for the Route 66 90th anniversary festival 3 weeks ago.

Today's Julius Shulman post takes us to Long Beach. This is "Job 97: Louis Shoall Miller, Frank Bros. (Long Beach, Calif.), 1947".

The other side of the street looks quite empty.

Here's a better look at the interior, and the furniture on sale.

I'll finish with this night shot.

All from Getty Research Institute

Frank Bros was at 2400 American Avenue (now Long Beach Boulevard). The building is visible on the 1972 aerial view, but the lot looks empty in 1994. Today, it seems to be a parking lot for school buses.

In a compilation labeled "Codan Engineering" with unidentified Southern CA images, one struck a cord because of a facade that seems slightly out of place. Or it might have seen more in keeping with the former ModernCraft Laundry at 900 La Brea Av. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10393

A very cursory CD search for "Kuster Electric" was not very productive, suggesting that the structure may have been located in an outlying area.

The HE exchange was HEmlock in Long Beach. The 1960 Long Beach CD lists the Kuster Electric Co at 1030 Long Beach Boulevard. The sign below has a large "801" which refers to their construction yard at 801 W 14th.

The two buildings on the right are still standing.

Such a charming little art deco building.

Thanks for the information Hoss.

Here's a membership card.

http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/whothehellissnowbum.htm

"Vic Tanny's basement Gym in Santa Monica & also the Westwood one near UCLA. I hated it when those gyms closed.
Vic himself finally gave me a life membership. My Membership was D23. 1957."
-Robert Fleischer

I was surprised the Santa Monica location was in a basement! I wonder if it moved 'above ground' at some point in time.

There was also a location at Hawthorne and 131st street as well. (see below)

http://cougartown.com/feedback321.php

"Come on Bob, Hawthorne had their very own Vic Tannys Gym on Hawthorne and 131st. The card above was mom's although I think she went twice."

Thanks for pointing this out FredH. I've seen that photograph numerous times and never noticed the Vic Tanny sign.

enlarged & lightened detail

Can you imagine how much that sign would be worth today?

Nice save HossC. Thanks.

The facade seems avant-gard, but maybe not, considering some of its 14th Street neighbors. Too bad it lost some of its gingerbread over the years.

Birthday celebration at the Colony Club in 1952. Looks like a fun party!

petermoruzzi.com

We saw the cover on NLA back in 2012 (but not the photograph)

fhammon http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=8662

Much to my surprise, I don't believe we have seen a photograph of the exterior of the Colony Club. (I looked through the past posts)

It was located at Western and 149th Street (see menu cover below)

http://vintage-ads.livejournal.com/3697197.html

There's a comment on the 'vintage-ads' site that says the Colony Club burnt down in 1962.

-so perhaps that's why it's been difficult to locate a photograph of the place.

Arnold St / Crown Hill Ave / W 3rd St

At the risk of beating this subject to death, before Arnold St became W 3rd St, it was Crown Hill Ave. By then the McFarland home had been numbered as 1340.
Mr McFarland's funeral was held there on 20 Feb 1911 (he left an estate of $200K, much of it in Times/Mirror stock):

The area was considerably built up by the time of Mr McFarland's demise. The Floral Apartments would soon go in next door to the east and
the Crown Hill Apartments were already built to the north, across the avenue. The neighborhood was rapidly ceasing to be the country district it once was:

A bit of Crown Hill Avenue (nee Arnold) still exists between Columbia Ave and Union Place.

My Grandfather had this picture in his home office in Buffalo NY. I have no idea why or how. Even my brother remembers it.

That's curious. Was he originally from the Los Angeles area?

T2, do you think this could be the Flora Apts. even though the sign above the front entrance says 'Floral'?

"1334 Crown Hill Avenue, Southern California, 1926" [this is how the photograph is titled at usc]

-Why "Southern California" instead of Los Angeles? (perhaps they weren't sure this was actually in Los Angeles)

Here's a closer look at the sign.

I noticed the sign for RHUBARB 2lbs..5c. Rhubard seems to have fallen out of favor in 2016....I never see it in markets today. I asked the manager about it. He said maybe but his vibe said probably not.

CBD, we have fresh rhubarb stalks at the Meijer and Kroger stores here in West Lafayette (it can be a bit expensive, especially out of season)

I make a rhubarb and mango salsa when I make fresh fish. -its tart and sweet. (like me )
_

Growing up my grandparents had it growing in their backyard. We were always warned "DO NOT EAT THE LEAVES", because they're poisonous. (is that correct odinthor? )

I believe it does say "Floral" on the Baist map. I just didn't have it enlarged enough. You've found it! Excellent :-) Is that the McFarland barn on the right edge of the photo?
